Show PIERCED TO THE GIZZARD The Salt Lake Tribune with the meannes and mendacity which are its chief distinctions reiterates now the election is over the falsehoods by which it sought to prejudice the public pub-lic against Democratic officials previous pre-vious to the election One of them was directed against County Clerk Meloy The gentleman who has made a very efficient officer remained silent luring those personal attacks but now the contest is past responds with the following fol-lowing keen thrusts which go to the very marrow of the matter Editor Tribune Election is over and you again this morning reiterate a sup posed conversation between Chairman James Secretary Cannon and myself in relation to the attempt of the former gentlemen to secure my consent that the ouny Registrar furnish them a copy of the registration list before it was com I pleted Each time I am quoted by you as saying jeeringly It is the fortune of I war and I will never give my consent I did not deem it opportune before the election to make any public comment upon your editorial references to this conversation con-versation as I considered it only part of the great bluff which your party managers man-agers were making for political effect on the County Registrar the Utah Commission I Com-mission and the Chief Justice and not I particularly l personal to myself Your I postelection and guerrillalike distortion of my remarks and your scriptural nuo tation He that taketh up the sword I shall perish by the sword show a gdoat ing disposition to kick a man when he is down and is so different in tone and spirit from your ordinary obituary editorial i edi-torial that it attracts my attention and demands public notice I I am quite sure I did not use any such language as quoted above I do remem I her distinctly that I said Our committee commit-tee have nade their canvass and are satisfied with the registration If your committee has not done likewise you should not blame me but should blame the Republican party for having appointed appoint-ed an incompetent committee I consider it the duty of apolitical campaign com I mitteenian to secure all legitimate advantage ad-vantage to lls party and not to labor in the interest of the opposing party I will not give my consent that you receive a I copy of the list until it is completed filed with me and becomes a public record I Allow me to suggest that I made a clean fight for reelection believing as I did as early as Sunday nIght before the election having completed my es timate at that time that I could not possibly overcome the adverse majority JNIy successful l opponent will not charge anything unfair in my methods I lost but have made no new discoveries as to the fortunes oar I have demonstrated demon-strated however that 1n addition to that of my own party associates who stood by me nobly I received the suffrage and support of about four hundred kind and considerate Republicans who unlike the Tribune have no hard clod to throw into my political grave nor stone to place in the pathway o my future efforts other than political directions Will the Tribune Trib-une permit a suggestion from one to whom it does honor overmuch You and the narty to whom you have given a quasiallegiance in the late campaign cam-paign have made serious charges affecting affect-ing the characferland good name of the county registrar Jlr Joseph Cohen which charges have fallen to the ground completely IW quJcl itnot be more honorable tnhbion hh orable to apologize to him for such 5n justica rather than to belittle a retiring officer whose administration of the tru the t-he has held would not afford you a single excuse for adverse criticism H V METOY i Salt Lake City Nov 9 1894 The Tribune makes lengthy reapon vhich is no l < ply but repeats the rubbish rub-bish with which it loaded its columns before be-fore election in attacks upon the I County Registrar the Utah Commission Commis-sion and the Chief Justice who strictly I complied with the law as to the regis traition lists and for doing so provoked j the enmity of the organ of slander and sophistry I The attempts of that paper to bedaub j be-daub those officials because they would I not respond when it pulled the string in the style of some of their immediate imme-diate predecessors have utterly and I miserably failed There has not as j yet been a single scrap of evidence adduced I ad-duced to form the shadow of an excuse for the Tribunes infamous assaults I and it has once more written itself down as theessence of ossininity the conduit of slimy vvulgarity and the in oarnetion of inconsistent dea it Mo i I loys sharp sword pierces the foul bird ito the gizzard I |
