Show 12 THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, October 25, 1989 MODERNS (continued from page 7) The resulting love triangle is particularly tension-filled, given that her new husband, Mr. Stone, is somewhat of a crazed egomaniac, and thinks little of disposing lifes that are contradictory to his own. Strangely, though, the characters seem not so much in love as they do in desperation. There is a lot of sadness beneath the glamorous exteriors people VVSETO5IIIl so antsoni'DpEB f0 . Wctar State College Police 1 affront, a primary theme of the film and of life in Paris of the 1920's. Diseau seems highly perceptive of the Paris scene, which he considers to be a "parody of itself," and of Hart, who sits in a cafe sketching among the rich and royal crowd "among the throne, but not of the throne." Like most of the characters in the film, Diseau is an eccentric openly talks of his suicide, going so far to write his own obituary so the paper will get it right. There are many such funny moments in this film, which carries a weighty dark and brooding feeling. Alan Rudolph, the director, composes an exact and stylish feel in a movie that lacks a single brightly-lit frame. The performances are also professional and well-enacted, and, though it seems to move rather slowly at times, the film captures and maintains your interest. The whole work has a strange surrealistic feel, both ponderful and haunting. This movie may not be for everybody. It is more centered on character than action, which is a nice change from the usual. There are also a few racy bits not exactly car chases, if you know what I mean. Overall, "The Moderns" is unique enough to offer an interesting diversion from the common cinema. ANATOMY flossing his teeth. One of the major obstacles Slovak encounters as he works towards a medical degree, is a tough anatomy professor (Rachel Woodruff played by Christine Lahti) who is out to make sure that Slovak has what it takes to become a doctor. Slovak's gamesome attitude toward studying is counter-balanced by his natural gift for medicine and knack for knowing what he needs (continued from page 11) to know on test days. Even though it was a clever idea to make a movie about the challenges of the average medical student, Gross Anatomy is a mediocre show with a few dramatic moments and a trickle of humorous moments sprinkled over the top to disguise the drama. The plot line is predictable, but I would recommend seeing it . . . if you haven't got anything else to do. BALLET portrayal of the relationships of six young people, the love they have for each other and the gentility of their lives. The November Repertory Program also includes the performance of the pas de deux from "Le Corsaire." The music was composed in the late nineteenth century by Riccardo Drigo and the choreography is after that of Marious Petipa. It has been called one of the most spectacular of the entire classic repertoire and has been danced by such virtuosos as (continued from page 6) Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Ballet West's production will feature principal dancer Jiang Qi and Jennifer Demko, a new member of the company in her first role with Ballet West. The performances begin at 7:30 each night on Nov. 3 and 4. Tickets range from $7 to $15, and Weber State students receive half price from 20 minutes before curtain time.
