Young Mothers Facing New Options, Challenges Despite the impact of the womens movement and the uphill battle for equal pay and opportun- - ity, today, the majority of new mothers are opting to stay at home with their babies and preschoolers. f Janet Spencer King, of Mothers Manual magazine, tells us that although record numbers of young mothers are returning to the marketplace, even more are choosing to be home-baseEditor-in-Chie- d. These mothers include women who have worked for as many as 10 years before having child, and have interenjoyed satisfying, well-paiesting careers, along with economic and emotional independence. "For some the change in status is totally comfortable, explains Ms. King, "but others arent quite so sure. The conflicting feelings and social pressures they must deal with is the subject of an report, "Mothers at Home and Why They Stay, in the JanuaryFeb-ruary- , 1982, issue of Mothers Manual. Drop In Income The biggest problem experienced by the women interviewed was the sudden drop in income when they began living on one salary, and their own feelings about not earning money. Whether it is a symptom of inflation, or the changing role of women today, most of the mothers wanted to do some sort of work from home, or work away from home several mornings a week. One had started a typing service, and another was continuing her public relations work as a freepart-tim- e home-base- d lancer. "Those whose previous jobs led the most easily to freelance or part-tim- e work were the most satisfied," Ms. King says. Write For Help She notes that other women and mothers who are interested in working at home can contact the National Alliance of Homebased Businesswomen for suggestions. Their address is NAHB, P. O.
