Sincerely, Manti Utah Stake Relief Society MANTI—The Manti City Council is researching the possibility of building a skate park. The issue surfaced at the Manti City Council meeting Wednesday, Nov. 19 when Linda Nielsen of Manti Mercantile approached the council concerning the skateboarders and bikers who ride along the sidewalk in front of her store. “This has been a concern of mine for years, and I had to put iron railings up to stop the kids from ruining my retaining wall and patio,” she said. Now her concern is that the edges of the sidewalk curbs are chipped and continually getting worse. “I really think that the city needs to consider some kind of park for these kids like the one off of I-15 in Orem where there is a fabulous skate park,” Nielsen said. She said youth are on the street at all times of the night, and her first concern is that someone might get hurt and then she would be held liable. Mayor Natasha Madsen said a youth had met with the city council a couple of months ago about revamping the old tennis courts. The city is receptive about the plans, but the lack of money in the city coffers has prevented any funding of such a project at present. The council discussed that there was a skateboard area behind the elementary school at one time, but it had been destroyed. Councilman Loren Thompson will do further research into designs and costs and report back at the next city council. In other city business, Nadean Demill, South Sanpete School District technology specialist, and Superintendent Don Hill met with the council to discuss the upcoming construction project at Manti Elementary School. The initial plans were to build directly east of the school, but the district has instead decided to build north and east of the school. The change in location means some utilities will need to be moved, and the issue was addressed in regards to hanging the new overhead fiber. “We just want to make sure we will have support of the city in hanging the new fiber on the poles next spring,” Demill said. The district plans to begin construction at the end of March or first of April with the building being complete by Christmas holidays next year. “We have this project on fast track to get it done quickly,” Hill said. Madsen said the city crew will be apprised of the plan and pledged support to the construction project. In another matter, Wade Anderson from the Manti City Post Office made the council aware of the need to change a few addresses. With the addition of Heritage Heights Subdivision on the east side of town, which will add new north-south streets, a few of the existing addresses will need to change to avoid confusion with mail delivery. The city, not the post office, is responsible to change the addresses. The council will discuss the issue further at its next meeting. Regarding continuing business, Councilman Korry Soper discussed the upcoming light parade planned for the day after Thanksgiving. “The light parade committee has done an excellent job in preparing for the activities that kick off the Christmas holidays,” Soper said. He encouraged all citizens to bring their families to the activities that are planned. Also, Soper said the fire station is complete and ready for occupancy. The new fire truck should be at the station by Friday. ROGER HUFFMAN FLOORS 50 S. State, Ftn.
