Leading Air Force planners realized in early 1955 that if an ICBM employing solid fuel could be developed, great savings in cost could be attained. Two years later the Air Research and Development Command, I nglewood, Calif., had the new fuel system. The solid fueled missile program was under way. In September 1958 the Air Force Ballistic Missile Divisolid-fumission set a deadline of one year for a sile to be launched from a full scale silo. The following December the Minuteman was accepted as an approved weapon system. One year later, on September 15, a full scale Minuteman was launched from a silo. Test number one was a complete success. Further testing from Vandenburg AFB and Cape Canaveral has increased the confidence in the highly reliable weapon system. Originally 18 launches were scheduled. Because of the progress achieved in the first eight tests, the Air Force was able to cancel the remaining 10 shots. , By shortening the program, months of precious development time and approximately 10 million dollars were saved. More important, the program was moved up by about a year. We of Ogden AMA can take pride in this weapon which the Air Force saying of "Power for Peace". full-scal- e, el full-sca- le Drive Safely During Holidays Several years ago a certain group men, women and children from all walks of life and from all sections of the country was making Christmas plans. There were 609 individuals in this group. They were buying gifts, mailing cards, trimming trees and doing the scores of other pleasantries associated with the Yuletide season. Each of the group cultivated an inner hope. Next year might be "their year". It wasn't. They never lived to see in the new year. At the close of the Christmas weekend this group had become obituary items. The traffic death toll stood at 609! Christmas is again just around the corner. Once more people are making plans for the shiney new year of 1963. Here are some good rules of the road that will help see you through the Christmas weekend and many more to come. Be sure you're physically and mentally fit to drive. Remember the old adages of "If you drink, don't drive if you drive, don't drink," and "Keep your mind on the road." Carbon monoxide fumes from a leaky muffler can kill. Crack your window when you stop in traffic behind another car. Tailor your driving to existing conditions. Know how to handle your car during poor weather. Observe speed laws. Remember, darkness doubles danger. Dim your lights when meeting an oncoming driver. Pay attention to stop signs and other signals. When following other vehicles, allow one car length for every 10 miles of speed. There's a couple of sayings that have been going around for years. "Reckless Driving Never Determines Who's Right, Only Who's Left," and "He Who Stops to Yield the Right-of-wa- y, Lives to Drive Another Day." Make them part of your Christmas tradition. THE CHAPLAIN'S CORNER The Christmas Story By Chaplain Theodore I J. Mitzncr For the joy of the Christmas Season and the hope and peace it brings, we return our humble and hearty thanks unto Thee, Our Father, Lord of heaven and earth. And we thank Thee for the' best gift of all, Thy Son, our Savior. As we participate in the abundance of this season, we pray the fruits of earth may bless all those who hunger and suffer want. And with every earthly blessing wilt Thou also put into our souls those spiritual gifts which neither life nor death can take away. Draw us into that matchless fellowship which at Christmas , knows no bounds of creed or station, wherein we know our loved ones to be secure in Thy care, and every follower of the Way drawm nearer to the heart of God. The event was another milestone for Ogden AMA which three years ago next month was assigned systems support management of .the weapon for the Air Force. . The Minuteman has a number of tricks up its sleeve which makes it a major economic breakthrough in the U.S.'s ballistic missile program. It is a weapon system based upon high reliability, great capacity for survival after enemy attack, maximum simplicity, decreased reaction time and greatly improved cost effectiveness. In the long run, the Minuteman will be considerably less expensive than the Atlas or Titan ICBM, and the Polaris December o' that the strength of our Armed Forces is thus used 7 assure the blessings of liberty for all men everywhere To eacn ot you, i extend warmest good wishes for joyous Christmas and for a New Year of happiness and tranquility. Stand the tree in water until it is brought into the house, and keep it in water until it leaves the house. Check the EUGENE M. ZUCKERT Secretary of the Air Force water level daily; the tree will absorb large quantities while it is indoors. 3. Support the tree firmly. Keep it well away from sources of heat radiators, stoves, fireplaces. 4. Keep the tree in the house for the shortest possible time; removal right after Christmas Day is recommended. 5. Artificial trees need care in selection and handling, too. Plastic and metalized plastic trees can burn; use the type clearly marked as made of materials. Those with built-ielectrical systems should carry the Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) label. Metal trees are not a fire hazard but may be a shock hazard. Use only indirect lighting with them- - If lighting strings are placed on a metal tree, it may become "charged" and dangerous. II. Fire-Saf- e Lighting 1. Wax candles on trees are highly dangerous. Don't use them on or near any tree. 2. Check tree lighting sets, electric candles and similar holiday lighting equipment, as well as extension cords, for frayed wires, loose connections and broken sockets. 3. Use only lighting equipment carrying the Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) label. Unlabelled materials, domestic and foreign, seldom meet safety standards. 4. Be sure the fuse on the circuit serving tree and other lighting is not over 15 amperes. Cord sets with a fuse in the plug, bearing a UL label, are available and recommended. 5. For outdoor lighting, use only sets listed for outdoor use by Underwriters' Laboratories. If an extensive holiday lighting is planned, call in a competent electrician to make sure safety rules and regulations are followed. 6. TURN OFF all tree and other indoor holiday lighting before retiring or leaving the house. III. Fire-Saf- e Decorations and Wrappings 1.
