IBs been a wonderful three years, said Mrs. Smith, and Ive nut some great students. Of course, other students did not really like my class and I didnt really like those students either, but somehow I stuck it out until my job in the temporary office pool came around. Over the years Mrs. Smith enlightened hundreds of students and she remembers many cf her star favorites. I mil always remember Ieggy Lou Hiccup who wrote a beautiful poem on her Kleenex one day, said Mrs. Smith. It was a wonderful little poem about frogs. I think Peggy is working as a cocktail waitress someplace now in Albuquerque. And I can never forget Shawn Larrabee who won our essay contest two semesters in a row. Hes now lettering in romantic novels at BTU and doing very well. There are so many others, so many solid memories. Mrs. Smiths greatest season was 1983 when her Animals in Literature class scored a stunning victory on the last night. When he caught wind of the city councils letter, he reacted by stating Im sure the Planning Commission would appreciate your support - youve just done away with us. BUT MAYOR Urry countered by stating that the city had been over and over the school plans many times, adding what more -- ACT exams. can we gain We didnt expect to win anything at the beginning of the year, she recalls. But her high heels mil be awfully hard to fill. That's the story Id like to see in the newspapers. We could even publish a photograph of the teacher, chalk in hand nestling up to her globe or her seating chart. After all, isnt Mrs. Smith as important as Coach Bazooka? Is a preposition any less important than a Voit basketball? Of course, Mrs. Smith isn't as bright as the coach. The coach is leaving to teach drivers education. Thomas pointed out that with each day delay in getting the storm drain monies from the district, the city is losing money in interest. And Mayor Urry added that a two week delay would probably last a lot longer as opponents continued leading a fight to block the school. Ironically, councilman David Wright was absent from the meeting, home with an illness. Mr. Wright has been an avid opponent of the school, and had his vote been registered, the letter might not have been approved. Help Save the Animals, Inc. received a call about you from someone who saw you dump your pretty calico k cat and her old kittens by the freeways Centerville exit. We made several trips looking for her in the next few days, but didnt find her. IN CASE youre uninfoi med in addition to being irresponsible, let me tell you some of the things that crossed our minds as we looked for your pet: first, any domesticated animal, let alone a nursing mother, has little or no chance of survival on its own. Did skunks or dogs get the kittens? Maybe the mother first. Kittens that young will not take long to die of thirst or starvation. Did she try to cross the freeway to reach the houses on the east side because shed had enough kindness along the way to expect some food? If so, she didnt stand much of a chance against the trafflc--an- d you could ask the animal control officers whove found kittens trying to nurse from a cold, dead mother what thats like. Did she head for some of the heavy machinery on the west for warmth or a hidden spot for her litter? In that case, she and the kittens were probably maimed horribly. Theres always the possibility of cruelty. Kittens and puppies, especially the trusting, friendly ones, become experiments or target practice for some. WE DID finally find your cat, bloody and cold, by the frontage road. We figure she made it about two days. We never did find the kittens. If, just in case, you are people, be aware some of the better alternatives for responsible pet owners. 1. YOU CAN go to one of our area veterinarians and have your pet spayed. 2. The Humane Society of Utah has a clinic in West Valley City. 3. IF THATS impossible, and Id like to hear your excuse, Animal Control and Care of Davis County offers your animals a chance of being adopted by someone who will spend the time and money to give them a quality life. Death is more common at the pound than adoption, but it is a mercifully quick and relatively painless one. Its too bad the concerned citizen who called us didnt get your license plates, you could be prosecuted. REMEMBER, if you see cruelty, abandonment or neglect, get all the information you can. Call Help Save the Animals or Animal Control or your local police. We care and we'll do our best. You do yours. Board of Help Save the Animals, Inc. She said the district feels it has acted in the best interest of all concerned in selecting the new school site. She also said the letter illustrates no further need for formal presentation and that the district did not plan on sending anyone to last nights Planning Commission meeting. Preliminary site preparation continues on the school location, with actual construction likely to begin very quickly. Any subsequent action by the opponents was not known at press time. Council Admits Joining Plant Biggest Mistake Continued from page one Im really concerned, and afraid of the future for our said Councilman Erickson. That was the residents, biggest mistake I made while serving on this council. Im sorry now that I voted in favor of the district. ASKED ABOUT the difficulty of a city withdrawing from the district, Mr. Jefferies explained: The state code says that when a district is created, the district functions as a single unit and only the entity that created the district can allow a city or entity to be released from the district. HOWEVER, UNTIL the district incures debt a property owner may petition to have his property removed from the district. Whether or not the 50 cents per family per month charged to operate the district is considered a debt is questionable, he explained. Councilman Lee Duncan said, it appears that the board is going to go ahead with construction of the plant and well have little to do about that. I just wish we hadnt been misled and lied to about the status of the bum plant, he said. IF THE 1 remaining cities want the plant and Centerville doesnt, why dont they let us out and go their own way. Councilman Kim Leishman admitted that the (Centerville) Council bought into something we didnt intend to buy. Now, Im sorry, he said. MR. JEFFERIES told the council that no decision has been made to construct the plant - but a decision is expected very soon because the contractor would like to begin construction about June 3. Any delay would be very costly to the builder, Mr. Jefferies explained. He said it would take about 24 months to construct the plant and to have it operational. MR. JEFFERIES also noted that money has been appropriated for a transfer station at BARD for Centerville residents to take their own garbage from cleanup, etc. But construction of this station is not guaranteed," he emphasized. It will depend on what Bountiful will allow if the station is located at BARD. No other station site has been proposed. COUNCIL MEMBERS reminded Mr. Jefferies that the tipping fee - the cost of having garbage picked up and hauled to the proposed plant near Hill AFB - has more than tripled since the first figures were released. At first, we were assured that the tipping fee (cost) would be about the same as we now pay. But this figure has been increased tremendously to as much as $22 per ton - or three times the present cost, the council noted. THESE figures, it was explained, are based on a continual use by Hill AFB of the steam generated by the plant for the dtiration of the contract. If the steam contract which is open-enon a basis - is broken the only penalty will be a fine of about $2 million. This is only a drop in the bucket to the $54.75 million bond, plus interest and costs, that will have to be paid by cities within the district. This could send the tipping fee to each home owner sky high, the council noted. MR. JEFFERIES agreed. 1 -- -- -- -- 20-ye- ar - -- d year-to-ye- ar . |
