KIMBALL TEACHER SPOTLIGHT Juanita Marshall shares her love of ceramics Submitted by Kimbtill Art Center Juanita Marshall has been practicing ceramics for more than 14 years, and she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in ceramics from the University of Utah this past spring. She's taught numerous beginning and intermediate classes over the years for the Kimball Art Center, Arts-Kids, and Park City Community Education classes. "I think everyone should try ceramics sometime during their lives," Marshall says. "They'll either become addicted to it like I have or it will give them an appreciation of the process and skill involved in working with clay." Parkites will have a chance to try their hand at pottery in Juanita's upcoming two-day workshop at the Kimball, "Impressions in Clay: Exploring Surface Decoration," on Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 5 and 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. Students will learn how to create stamps and Rollo wheels that will be used to make impressions or designs in clay. The class will concentrate on the decorative aspects of a piece and students will be able to take the tools home to enhance their own pottery. "My focus is on one-of-akind pieces using both the pottery wheel and sculptural hand building techniques," says Marshall. "Nature and natural objects are a big focus in my work." Marshall likes to take her time and enjoys working with clay - it's a laborintensive medium that results in many surprises, successes and sometimes, disasters. "'Even when it's not perfect, I learn something new," she says. "I'm very tactile, I love doing everything from start to finish-recycling clay, creating the shape, mixing the glazes and doing the initial firing." Marshall was one of only 10 master and graduate students of ceramics, photography, painting and printmaking invited to participate in a show at the Williams Fine Art Gallery in Salt Lake City. She is currently at work completing a portfolio and experimenting with ceramic wall sculptures reflective of Canyonlands and other natural formations. Join Marshall for the Kimball Art Center's upcoming two-day workshop, "Impressions in Clay: Exploring Surface Decoration Techniques" on Oct. 5 and 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost for the class is $70 and includes all materials. Members receive a 10 percent discount on all classes and workshops and anyone who registers at least 10 days before a class begins receives $5 off. To register, go to www.kimballartcenter. org or call Education Director Jennv Diersen at 649-8882.
