AMERICAN LEAGUE NATIONAL LEAGUE Athletics stay hot THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Michael Kunzeiman THE ASSOCIATED PRESS — Kirk Saarloos took a shutout into the ninth inning and Nick Swisher homered to lead the Athletics to their 11th wirfin 12 games,5-2, over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Jay Payton added his fifth homer since joining the A’s from Boston at the All-Star break as Oakland won for the 3lst time in 38 games to enter August leading the wild-card race by 1 % games overthe New York Yankees. BOSTON — Two games after Manny Ramirez was booed by the hometownfans, all was forgiven. Ramirez earned a loud standing ovation before and after his pinch-hit single in the eighth inning Sunday lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. After the game, the enigmatic outfielder shrugged off the trade talk that kept him on the bench for most of two daysleading up to Sunday's trade deadline. “Forget about the trade. This is the place I wantto be,” Ramirez said. “They wantto win. I want to win, too. I’m back.” Entering the game 54 minutes after the 4 p.m. deadline passed for BOSTON 4 trades without waivers, Ramirez MINNESOTA 3 bounced a chopper up the middle to score Edgar Renteria and give the Red Soxtheir fifth consecutive victory. After Renteria crossed the plate, Ramirez tookoff his batting helmet and pointed both hands at the crowdin a double-barreled salute. “That’s hard not to get chills whenthatstuffis happening,” Red Sox manager Terry |Francona said. “That's aboutas electric as you'll see it. Mike Timlin (4-1) allowed twohits and an inten- tional walk in 1 ¥s innings, striking out one. Curt Schilling pitched the ninth forhis fifth save, kicking off another “Manny!”chant. Juan Rincon(4-4) allowed one run on two hits and awalk. Althoughhe is one of the most productive batters in baseball history,.Ramirez has been onthe trading block every year as the Red Soxtry to unload the remainderofhis $160«million, eight-year contract. Asthe trade deadline approached, the Red Sox discussed a three-team trade with TampaBay that would have sent him to the New York Mets, and Francona offered Ramirez the weekendoffto clear his head. But Ramireztold reporters before the gamethat he wanted to stay. And, when Renteria doubled off the Green Monster with twooutsin the eighth, the Twins opted to intentionally walk David Ortiz to face Adam Stern. Beforethe four pitches could be thrown, the crowdbegan chanting for Ramirez. On ball three,, Ramirez popped out of the dugout for the on-deckcircle, and the sellout crowd rose to its feet. For somefans,it was thefirst knowledge they had that he wasn’t traded. The announcementthat he wouldpinchhit could barely be heard, and when Ramirezsingled to put Boston ahead 4-3, the noise in the paler got even louder, AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Boston NewYork Toronto Baltimore TampaBay CENTRAL WL Pa GB 5945 567. — 10 73) 56 47 544 212 55 5351-5106 64 51 52 495 712 19 40 66 377 20 82 Str WS W2 W1 L4 W4 Home 3048 33-21 30-22 2825 28-28 Away intr 29-27 12-6 23-26 11-7 23-29 8-10 23-27 8:10 12-38 3-15 110 55 64 28 46 46 Str_~W2 W4 L4 L4 14 Home 33-49 25-26 2922 2426 23:29 =Away 34-16 30-25 25-28 26-28 1538 91 612 55 1412 46 12 W4 L1 L1 WL Pt GB Chicago «67-35 657 — Cleveland 55 51 519 14 Detroit 50 54 481 18 Minnesota 54 50 519 14 Kansas City 38 67 362 3012 WEST WoL Pt GB L10 Los Angeles 60 45 571 — 46 Oakland 58 46 558 Tes «53-1 S10 Seattle 45 59 433 Intr 12-6 15-3 8-10 9-9 99 Str Home Away Intr 11/2 30-22 35-18 2824 25-28 30-23 23-28 25-27 20:31 126 10-8 99 10-8 TODAY'S GAMES Chicago White Sox(Buehrle 11-4) at Baltimore (Chen 7-6), 10:35 a.m. Oakland(Blanton 5-9) at Minnesota (J.Santana 10-5),6:10 p.m. SUNDAY’S RESULTS MY.
