As you may have noticed, KPCW's 1947vintage transmitter, fondly known as "Edna," has been somewhat temperamental lately, resulting in the station being on and off the air at times. Last week Wireless called in consulting engineer ' Robert Chamberlin, two technicians and a spectrum analyzer from the Salt Lake Fire Department, as well as KPCW is own technical staff, in an attempt to nurse Edna back to health. Saturday, KPCW Technical Director Roger Cucci announced that Edna was feeling much better and was emitting normally. Unfortunately, however, there is no such thing as health insurance for transmitters and Edna's recent problems have cost the station several hundred dollars it doesn't have. This Friday, in conjunction with the grand opening of Leibos at the resort, the station is holding a fuhdraiser to help pay for the new tubes and parts it took to make Edna happy again. "On behalf of the board of Trustees of KPCW I'd like to thank CUSTOMB Mountainland Management and Leibo's for offering to donate all proceeds from their grand opening," stated Blair Feulner, president of Community Wireless, concerning the 7 p.m. fundraiser. • • • • • • •••LC. According to Utah department of Corrections Spokesman Jack Ford, authorities are now rethinking their original theory that he and another inmate had headed south toward Mexico. "There is some thinking now they may have headed north but that is just speculation." One of the prisoners was captured the day after the escape but Noble and Kent Bowden have apparently disappeared without a trace. Texas authorities originally assumed the two men could not survive in the surrounding desert but Ford said no bodies have been found. Noble and Bowden were transferred to the Texas facility last July along with 96 other Utah prisoners. The move was made in an attempt to relive overcrowding in local jails. Following the transfer one of Noble's daughters, Misty Dawn, claimed she told Utah authorities the security in Texas was not adequate. Another of Noble's daughters, was also convinced her father would escape and has gone into hiding. However, according to Ford, Misty did not express her concerns to his office. He added that the prisons executive director, in fact, had recently toured the Crystal City Detention Center and he "found it to be adequate." As to whether the recent escape has caused the Department of Correction to change its policy regarding sending inmates there, Ford said, "No. As far as we are concerned, it is a secure facility. We have no intention of canceling the contract in Texas." He added the center has since "tightened up." Noble and Bowden were working outside painting the front of the building when they escaped. • ARTISTS 25 CRAFTSMEN Visit our new state of the art showroom by appt. for Great!
