Show B-3 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, June 1-3, 2005 TIPS FROM THE PRO by Ben Sinclair Pre-swing activity: body posture Pool Tables, Re-Felting, Accessories & Moving Today we arc going to talk about a vital pro-swing activity. Too many golfers overlook the importance of body posture. The posture of our body will directly influence our ability to swing the club. The skeletal system is designed to support the weight of the body, while the muscles are designed to control the movement of the body. With the correct posture at set up. the body will work more efficiently during the action of the swing. If our muscles arc busy supporting the weight of our body, they will no! be able to effectively flex and extend during the swing. To achieve an athletic stance, stand with your feel shoulder width apart and allow the knees and ankles to flex slightly. While keeping the back and pelvis on the same plane, flex forward from the bottom of the hip. If the flex or bend from the hip is done correctly, the hands should hang about four to five inches in front of the knees. In this position, a straight line should be formed from the back of the head to just below the waistline. While working the body into this posture position, do not worry if ii feels like you rear end is sticking out. The position may feel different or awkward, but give it a try ia your game. The weight distribution under your feet is very important in relation to the balance of the swing. Your weight should be equally distributed between the left and right foot. 'Hie front to back weight should be centered or just behind the ball of the foot. If there is too much weight on the heel, the tendency is for the body to straighten up during the swing. When the weight is too much on the toes, the tendency is for golfers to move closer towards the ball and result in off center hits. With weight distributed correctly in the set up, the muscles will be allowed to concentrate on motion versus maintaining balance. To end our discussion on posture, be sure to stay relaxed over the ball. Golf is a game of smooth motion and tension will only create swing flaws. Although the higher flows are a nuisance now. they will flush out the silt and moss and rejuvenate all of the habitat and should make for some excellent summer action! Although not nearly as significant as the Brown Trout spawn on our waters, the Rainbow trout spawn has just taken place. The Cutthroat spawn will occur in another month, so keep your eyes out for that especially on waters where they are dominant. Make sure you avoid wading through spawning beds! The beds, or "redds" as we call them, can be identified as the light colored, clear patches of gravel where the trout deposit their eggs while spawning. One wrong step could potentially crush thousands of eggs. Please do your part to ensure that our fisheries continue to sustain wild populations of fish in the future.
