Sweeneys reject idea to sell Treasure Hill • Continued from A-5 ment parcel, much of which would be kept free of buildings. The Sweeneys previously have set aside a swath of the adjacent hillside as open space. Sweeney said the family wants to build ireasure Hill, and has argued that the project will benefit Park City, especially Old Town, by adding new ski-in, ski-out units. "Nobody should get their hopes up because I don't think it's realistic and we're not interested," Sweeney said. * HfSlsfcTsaid discussions regarding purchasing the land or buying some of the development rights could not occur until the Planning Commission makes its decision about the project, which is not expected for months. "Nobody's going to know what the price is until you really know what you can build up there," Sweeney said. Mayor Dana Williams, who came to political prominence as a development watchdog and conservationist, concurs that discussions about a purchase, if they ever occur, would take place after a Planning Commission vote. City Hall's open-space funding from a 2002 land bond is dwindling and the government has discussed whether to ask voters to approve a third such ballot measure. The previous two bonds were each $10 million and each passed overwhelmingly. Williams said the Sweeneys have not been interested in negotiating for the land and tbat the original 1980s development approval is "one of the strongest vested-rights projects I've ever seen." He said the number of units approved on the land is very high and that he is "extremely concerned" about the projects location. Williams said he would support asking voters to approve a Treasure Hill-specific open-space bond if there were a communitywide groundswell for such a ballot measure. He claims that the Sweeneys once asked for $25 million for the land, an amount far higher than any of the city's open-space purchases and much more than the city has in its conservation coffers. He wonders if open-space money would be better spent on other parcels. "For $25 million, we could buy hundreds and hundreds of acres of open space, thousands of acres," Williams said.
