Soon enough troublesome Edmund (Skandar Keynes) trails Lucy into Narnia, where he meets the White Witch. It's a meeting bound to make most of us queasy, and not because Edmund keeps demanding Turkish delight. The witch is more imperious than imperial, but her icy beauty has a certain heat. Belief and its relationship to rationality is a theme here - and the lesson Kirke gives Peter (William Moseley) and Susan (Anna Popplewell) about their sister's maiden sojourn offers a fine rebuttal to too hasty doubt in the face of the inexplicable. Eventually all four Pevensies travel through the wardrobe - and when they do, they begin to fulfill a prophecy about the two daughters of Eve and two sons of Adam arriving to help Asian end the White Witch's rule. Tumnus is but one of the fabulously rendered beasts of Narnia. Some will become allies, others foes. Regardless, one of the cinematic gifts\ of Adamson's movie (which he adapted ever so gently with Ann Peacock, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) is that every beast, every mythical creature beguiles. From Tumnus (prosthetically enhanced) to the lupine chief of the White Witch's not-so-secret police, the yammering Mr. and Mrs. Beaver and the Christ-like lion Asian (all CGI-tweaked), Adamson delivers the magic of cinema. These moments more than make up for occasionally jarring images of the kids against a screened vista. Adamson and company have made a tender improvement on Lewis' text by making headstrong Edmund more responsible for his betrayals. Edmund doesn't need bewitched candy to be jealous of Lucy or resentful of golden bro Peter; he doesn't need candy to fall hook, line and sinker over some adult's wicked come-ons. And one of the sublime images in "Chronicles" comes when Edmund has a moment of reckoning with Asian (voiced by Liam Neeson). Forgiveness transforms. Trusting in the impossible has its own deep and magical logic. Death is not always what it seems. All these notions, of course, have roots in C.S. Lewis' Christian faith. But to its credit and power, the film allows them a reach that exceeds any one religion's grasp. When being late becomes bothersome LGYX33OO Double Your Anytime Minutes PARK CITY Majesty of a splendid *Wardrobe* By JUDY MAGID MediaNews Group Wire Service Santa Claus is called many things - St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kriss Kringle, Pere Noel and Babbo Natale - but never, "fashionably late." Food for thought in this season of party invitations, family get-togethers and performances of "The Nutcracker," "Beauty and the Beast," .and "Babes in Toyland." where pleasure can be lost in the inner debate between innate good manners and intense distaste of being the first to arrive at a social event. No worries. Ground rules are simple. In , the ceremonies of life, including weddings, funerals, formal dinners, and events where you are host or guest of honor, one should never be late. That answer is from no less an expert than Judith Viorst, aka Miss Manners, when a bride-to-be asked if it would be proper to appear "fashionably late" at a bridal shower in her honor. "Gentle Reader, there is no such thing (fashionably late) as you will realize if your bridegroom is not waiting at the altar when you get there," Viorst wrote in a 2004 newspaper column. Harsh. Especially when most of us would just like to know when it is permissible, to be late and how much lateness is permissible. While Viorst states that etiquette requires punctuality for a dinner party where guests are expected to be seated within 15 minutes of arrival, she is more lenient about cocktail parties, where time of arrival "tends to be more loose." Still, guests should not get giddy with freedom. While no one wants to be the first person at a party standing around with no one to talk to but a busy host, coming really late also can put you in the spotlight. Consider an hour into a cocktail buffet, people are chatting, the inviting aroma of the dinner buffet is beginning to waft through the house and . . . the front door opens with a blast of cold air. Fashionably late means no more than 30 minutes past the indicated time, according to eti- quette experts. If the invitation reads "from 6 to 9 p.m.," it means you may arrive any time between 6 and 9 p.m. It does not mean you have to stay from 6 to 9 p.m., nor does it mean that you can come at 9 p.m. and stay all night. (If you're arriving at the end, stay no more than 30 minutes.) Attending public performances - there are people who love the theater and never come late - is another debate. Think about it. You settle in your theater seat. Lights dim. The overture begins, the curtain slowly rises and as you lose yourself in make-believe . . . and someone steps on your foot. Performing arts groups set their own rules, but generally put some limits on late-seatings. Need a Holiday Gift Idea?
