This willnbe the first of my " best of '05 reviews. (" Best" could mean my personal favorite or just anything that made a big splash this year.) The first time I listened to the Arcade Fire I thought they were "neat" but not much more than that. Shortly after this I had all but forgotten about them until I saw them play at Coachella. Everyone I met seemed to be a fan. So I decided to sit down with a copy of "Funeral" and really pay attention to it for once. Bizarre narrative lyrics whispered stories o\~ burning witches, the freezing faces of parents, vampires and tunnels that would reach and twist above neighborhoods to connect the windows of different houses. I got Goosebumps. I thought about being a kid. The metaphors were razor accurate and the emotions were never trite or forced. This album is just honest.
