Show Times Newspaper Thursday, January 6, 2005 Page A3 CHARM OF OREM RAY'S AUTO CLOSES continued from Page A2 weekday, and enjoy lunch with a group of Orem's most charming residents. Or attend the weekly Saturday-night dances held in that same location and have a dance with some of those same people. Attend a meeting of the Orem Kiwanis Club or the Kiwanis Golden K Club, and discover a charming fellowship, fel-lowship, that is available to all civic-minded individuals individu-als of both genders. Participate in some of their civic activities and community service. Witness the annual Cross Country race for Utah high school students, sponsored by the Orem Kiwanis Club every year! Some of Orem's most charming women are found at their meetings, held every other Wednesday, at the Orem Senior Friendship Center. Dressed in colorful afternoon attire, they play hostesses to Borne of the most charming speakers and performers, around. Organized for over a half-a-century, the charming Orem Women's Club is widely recognized for its community com-munity service and financial assistance to worthy projects. The list could go on and on, but one only has to consider con-sider the thousands upon thousands of people, who have to come to experience the charm of Orem in the past 50 years! Perhaps, some people might see little charm in being able to shop at one of Orem's many convenient retail plazas, or at Orem's thriving regional region-al University Mall; or attending school at Orem's Utah Valley State College. Others, perhaps, see it differently, and enjoy living in "America's Most Liveable City." Orem's MOST CHARMING, I save until last: Orem's MOST CHARMING entity is the magnificent magnifi-cent Mount Timpanogos, which looms in all of its splendor and glory over this community! Even better than living among the Alps of Switzerland, living in Orem entitles one to witness the MOST CHARMING natural resource in the world. Every day has its own season! Every day is a different dif-ferent scene. A different view! It is a bit like witnessing witness-ing a magnificent giant-screen television panorama of all the planet's peaks and mountains, with NO commercials! com-mercials! Where is the beauty? Where is the charm! The charm is right here, IN OREM! continued from Page Al An exception to the "first come, first served" rule was when out-of-towners found themselves in hardship situations. situ-ations. Ray remembers one incident in which a man's vehicle broke down on the freeway. "I hauled him in and he asked, 'How soon can you work on it?' My regular customers cus-tomers have a place to sleep and eat. I told him I try to put customers ahead if they're from out of town and are broken bro-ken down." Later, Ray received a let-ter let-ter of thanks from the man and his wife, who lived in the Los Angeles area. The wife wrote: "We'd give anything if we had a Ray's Auto Clinic down here." Ray admits he has had some negative feedback, too. "You cant go 34 years without with-out having someone on your neck," he smiled. "About twice a month, there would be someone cantankerous, with problems to start with, and you can't fix it and they're mad at you. The Lord puts them in your way to keep you humble, I guess. But I've had a lot more of the good stuff than the derogatory." Ray has maintained loyal employees through the years by treating them like family. He fondly remembers watermelon water-melon busts at noon in the summertime, and the annual Christmas parties and summer sum-mer barbecues. In recent years, he has had six by-pass surgeries, a heart attack, and three stints. Breathing car exhaust and exposure to chemicals have decreased his lung capacity and he is on oxygen at night. Thirty years on cement floors have resulted in two knee replacements. Despite the aches and pains and challenges, chal-lenges, Ray keeps going. Along with a couple of friends, he goes to the Fitness Center at 7 o'clock most mornings, walks a mile, and spends a half-hour in the swimming pool.
