Show Friday, January Mummers big day at hand MARS f PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The nation's oldest and longest New Year's Day parade welcomes 1988 today when some 20,000 people decked out in satins and sequins Cakewalk to the traditional "Oh Dem Golden Slippers" theme up Broad Street. A crowd of at least a million is expected to line the sidewalks along the route of the annual Mummers Parade, while millions more will watch on television, city officials said. The parade begins before 8 a.m., weather permitting, and ends 12 hours later. It takes eight hours, sometimes more, for the entire parade to pass one point. Mummers never walk.
