Democrats, meanwhile, hope to capture the governor's of- fice, unseating Republican Rep. James V. Hansen in the 1st Congressional District and Democrat Wayne Owens in the 2nd District. The Republican state ticket will be led by Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is seeking his third re-ele- ct six-ye- term. It appears ar Hatch will be challenged by Brian Moss, son of former Sen. Frank Moss, the man Hatch unseated in 1976, said state Democratic Chairman Randy Horiuchi. Moss is a relative newcomer to politics. He ran, but lost, a race for Utah state treasurer several years ago. "The real matchup, of course, would have been Hatch v f: h, support of GOP e rect decisions, pow- alike Horiuchi and Moody said it was unlikely Bangerter would be challenged for the GOP nomination. "When the campaign starts, challenges recruiting Sen. Jake Gam, Cook still GIANT and they'll stand by him. (Republicans) will come home and we'll hold the governorship." In the 1st District Hansen and Democrat Gunn McKay will renew their battle for the er broker Jon Huntsman. McKay narrowly lost a comeback attempt in 1986. As the only Democratic member of the Utah congressional delegation, Wayne Owens is a primary target for Republicans. "As long as Wayne talks conservative in Utah and votes liberal in Washington, D.C., he has problems. And that's what he's doing," said Moody. Salt Iake County Republican Chairman Richard Snelgrove says he's going to run for the GOP nomination. "Richard is the clear and strongest candidate now. But we're still searching and we're going to talk to several really heavy hitters the next several weeks. If they get in, they'd be stronger than Richard," Moody said. Horiuchi said he hopes Snelgrove is the GOP nominee. "(Snelgrove) is just plain pi date, challenging Bangerter head-to-hea- d and strident and that comes across. You can't beat a man as likable as Wayne with a person like that. We'll hold this seat." Rep. Howard Nielson, is seeking his fourth term in the 3rd District. Horiuchi said that Utah County Democratic Chairman Robert Stringham will likely be his party's nominee. Nielson has never been seri- seat Hansen took from McKay in 1980. McKay represented the 1st District" for 10 years and Matheson," said Republican Chairman Craig Moody. Former Democratic Gov. Scott M. Matheson considered the race earlier this year but declined to run. Horiuchi searched for other candidates, including Matheson's son, Scott Matheson Jr., before Moss came forward. "Brian is ready to start hiring campaign staff. He's ready to go," Horiuchi said. In the governor's race Republican Gov. Norm Bangerter will be challenged by former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson. There also is a possibility the Tax Limitation Coalition of Utah will offer its own candi- KICK-OF- ously challenged in the heavily Republican district. Craig Oliver, the Democrat who challenged Garn in a losing effort in 1986, says he's interested in the race. But Horiuchi believes Oliver may instead run for the Salt Iake County Commission next year. er Republicans and Democrats alike are waiting to see if GOP Attorney General David Wilkinson seeks a third term. Moody said there are several Republicans who are considering running against the GOP incumbent. Cook, who has run several Republican campaigns, says he has been approached by tax limitation leaders and asked about running as an independent candidate for governor.
