Show Moss Campaigns for Senate Independent Writer By Samantha L. Dunn "Proper allocation of scarce tax dollars, more Jobs, and federal programs to help with education are key to a better Utah," said Brian Moss.. Moss Is running for the U.S. Senate. He said he Is the man to bring about these and other changes. He Is running against Incumbent Republican Senator Orrin Hatch. Moss said that Utah Is defenseless In terms of its national power while Hatch Is in office. Moss said Hatch places too much emphasis on what Moss calls, "irrelevant issues such as the hearings." Moreover, he added Hatch is neglecting local Issues in his attempt to advance his own political career. Moss also stated that Hatch does not Iran-Cont- ra even live In Utah. He said that Utahns need a senator with his "feet firmly planted In Utah." Hatch currently sits on the Judiclaiy committee, a committee Moss said is of little use other than that it gives Hatch "abundant TV time." On the other hand. Moss said he would like to sit on the commerce or interior committee where the emphasis is on the economy, land and water. He stated these committees will not get him on the "Today" show, but said they will take care of Issues at home. In addition to a committee change. Moss said that Utah needs more federal government Involvement, and that the federal government should help in areas where local government capability fails to be sufficient. In fact. Moss said he feels that more federal government involvement in education is vital. He cites federal programs which work at a local level. Moss underscored his support for a strong military system. However, he sees "It problems with the current system. seems to me that we could have a strong defense program for a lot less money if we just get rid of the wasteful programs, and the graft and corruption thats going on out there," Moss said. Moss further states that with graft and corruption in check, the deficit would come down, and more money could go towards other programs such as education and job training. Moss has been repeatedly asked if he is waging a grudge match against the man who unseated his father, Frank Moss, in 1976. Moss said the fact that both parties are running "high level" campaigns is proof that it Is not a grudge match. He said it is ' Just the political process at work. Moss, a graduate in economics from the University of Utah is a small business man who owns a chain of sandwich shops. He said he has presently put his life on hold to run for the Senate. Moss has never held a public office, however, he did put in an unsuccessful bid for the office of state treasurer in 1984.
