The event is a bi-annual affair that gives the faculty the chance to demonstrate their talents. All types of art grace the exhibit. Everything from photography to painting can be found there. Laura McBeth, assistant to the curator said, 'There's a good mix. ... All sell their work." Mark Biddle, contributing artist, said "I hammer the space with a storm of black marks, whitewash them with a Two new people get jobs in opera Utah Opera Company announces the addition of two new staff members, John Bates and Dr. Krista Rodin. Bates will fill a newly created staff position, director of development, and Rodin has taken the position of production Manager, recently vacated by Kay Barrell. Bates is a member of the Utah State Bar Association and was previously the Associate General Counsel for Mountain Fuel Supply Company and Northwest Energy Company. He's listed in the "Who's Who in the West" and "Who's Who in Finance and Industry." He has been General Council and a member of the Utah Opera Board for ten years. Bates takes the position of director for the purpose of fund raising activities. Rodin has a doctorate in English literature and American studies and a secondary teaching certificate in English, German and social science. Rodin has been state director and production director in the state theatres of Germany and Austria, and in the United States, both for opera and straight theatre productions. She has taught opera, opera production and staging in German universities and conservatories and was assistant state director of Utah Opera Company. Kerns appointed Ballet West announced the appointment of world-renowned conductor Terence Kerns as music director. Kerns joins Ballet West with a background as one of the foremost conductors of ballet. Over the last ten years, he has been music director for the London Festival Ballet, the Scottish Ballet and for the Jeoffrey Ballet and has worked with many other companies of international renown. Familiar to Utah audiences, Kerns was guest conductor for last years Ballet West productions of "La Bayadere," "Carmina Burana" and "Anna Karenina", and received critical acclaim locally and nationally. Dorothy Stowc of the Descret News wrote of "Carmina Burana", "...the present production profit's from the masterful and vigorous approach of conductor Terence Kerns. The orchestral performance is fervent, and Kerns has a way of sending the music on just a shade ahead of the dancers, thus drawing them into its upward spiral." Kern has'joined Ballet Wests permanent artistic staff and has relocated to Salt Lake from London with his wife and two-year-old son. Mark Biddle Contributing Artist Kathy Kankainen, who received her education from the University of Utah, said "My wanderings in the desert have led me on adventures which have resulted in a passion for desert walls, forms, colors and the prehistoric Indian cultures that inhabited Utah. The artist who has the most art pieces in the exhibition is Bale Bryner. He blends colors with geometric shapes and natural life. The prices of the art range anywhere from $50 to $5,000 with some pieces which are not for sale. This past weekend one of the art peiccs which was not for sale, was stolen from the gallery.
