activities had been planned for that evening Because of the amount and length of daylight in Leningrad our head leader decided to chaperonegroup of delegates into the city to do some shopping and some additional sightseeing Fortunately bus stop was within walking distance allowing us not only quick and easy access to most parts of the city but also an opportunity to experience the Soviet mass transit system In many areas of the United States the majority of the population own and drive their own vehicles Asresult if the majority of the population of another country does not drive we view them as either unfortunate or somewhat backwards In the Soviet Union the majority of the population do not own or drive their own vehicles While it is true that most cannot afford their own vehicles they also do not need to The Soviet Mass transit system is probably one of the most efficient systems that our delegation had the opportunity to witness It utilizes the services of buses electric trolleys subways and trains all within an operational structure that has stops on almost every block which are covered in fifteen to twenty minute intervals The delegates were surprised at the sheer number of people who used the system to its fullest potential During our evening trip to the shopping district in Leningrad the buswas in was about as packed asTokyo subway during morning rush hour What was even more surprising was the way Soviets pay for their mass transit service As far as our limited experiences and observations permitted our understanding of the Soviet mass transit system the fares are based on an honor system where an individual can pay as much or as little as he wants depending upon how much he can spare or how much he perceives will be adequate for the distance he will be traveling It washumbling experience to see the Soviets judiciously and honorably pay for their fares without any noticeable influence forcing them to The Soviets were so dedicated to paying their fares thatfew of the Soviets we observed would spend their entire travel time on the bus just trying to deposit their fare in one of the collection box ticket dispensers at various locations on the bus Becausefew of us happened to be nearcollection box we offered to deposit the fares offew of the people that we saw Despite the language barrier the relief that we saw on their faces when we offered to deposit their fares was thanks enough After about twenty minutes we stopped in front of the largest department store in the city After everyone disembarked our head leader directed us from the street where the bus had deposited us onto the largest street in Leningrad Nievski Prospekt The street even at night was very busy Boards of people and pedestrians literally surrounded the department store as they entered and exited As the delegation plowed their way through the crowds the delegates began to takereal hard look at the entire scene that lay before them On both sides of the street were historical buildings which during the eighteenth and nineteen centuries housed behind their baroque styled walls offices elite shops banks and homes for the wealthy But in the present these same buildings have had their interiors subdivided into offices small shops and standardized apartment housing As we continued on our way to the Beriozka store the number of people out on the streets did not seem to dwindle at all Eventually our leader turned off the main thoroughfare ontoside street One of the architectural features whichfew of the delegates noted was the feeling of oppressiveness which the dark gran ite facades columns and gargoyles instilled in us That compounded bychilling breeze andsudden lack of people walking up and down the sidewalks made it appear as if we had been transported back to days when Stalin was Premier The objective of our walk during this walk through downtown was to find one of the larger Beriozka stores in Leningrad These state run stores are more or less Capitalistdelight Each store stocksvariety of top quality nianeinade and manufactured products only for sale to foreign tourists The products in these stores range from decorative trays lacquered horses and dolls to clothing jewelry coins fur hats fur coats and beautifully crafted lacquered iboxes worth up to five liun dred dollars Interestingly enough however despite the fact that each item in the store is priced in Rubles the cashiers convert the Ruble value into its equivalent in whatever currency the individual will be paying In addition these stores will only ac cept payment in the form of cash credit card or travelers cheque and they will insist that you pay right down to the exact amount of the purchase When we arrived at the Beriozka store which just happened to be located in one of the more ominous looking buildings to our consternation we discovered that it was just closing few of the delegates found that out the hard way when they unknowingly entered the store began browsing and were verbally thrown out by the ladies behind the cashier counters The disappointed delegates stood outside wondering what they were going to do for the rest of the evening as there was still plenty of light readers will recall that because Leningrad is so far north in the summertime the sun never completely sets for us to do some sightseeing Uncertain as to what we would do the delegation began walking away from the Beriozka without any real concern for direction or time After passing through some sidestreets and some smaller avenues we arrived at the banks of the Neva River and surprisingly enough across the boulevard from the Hermitage museum Having nothing better to do we directed ourselves toward the museum It was rather odd to see the place completely vacant no pedestrians no tourists and no busses It was almost as odd as seeing the Disneyland parking lot empty Without the crowds however we were offeredunique view of the Hermitage not as the museum frequented by art lovers and tourists from around the world but as The Winter Palace historical monument and reminder of the illustrious past of the Soviet Union At the time we arrived the palace was bathed inreddish-orange light which was being emitted from the sun We continued on our way around the Winter Palace and discovered that boat tours on the Neva River were still being conducted The delegates decided unanimously to go on the tour We all boardedfloating ticket booth dock where we waited for one of the boats As we waited we looked out over the city of Leningrad as the sun continued to sink lower and lower After about twenty minutes our boat arrived and we began to board The majority of us immediately went to the open observation deck on top of the boat It was fun to be sitting there as the sun was at our backs and the wind was blowing in our faces First the boat took us underneath several of the large steel bridges which linked the two main islands upon which the city was built The bridges at their center are draw bridges which are lifted after midnight to facilitate late night cargo transport on the river These bridges are dropped in the morning just before the rush hour traffic heardrumor thatdelegate was out on an outing past midnight and was stranded on the wrong side until morning The boat continued for some time passed the bridges until we caughtglimpse of the outlying suburbs One of the first man-made landmarks we saw were the onion shaped spires of two cathedrals as they literally sprouted from the low lying trees We also were able to see the factories and industrial parks which lined the river and used its water for their manufacturing processes few of the factories had slogans mounted on their roofs in large block letters Our Russian speaking leader translated the message and told us that the majority of the signs promoted economic victory through Lenin and his beliefs As time passed the wind had increased in intensity and decreased in temperature to the point thatfew of us were becoming numb with cold One pair of delegates had pulled out an umbrella and were holding it in front of them aswind deflector Our boat reversed course after about twenty five minutes and headed back toward the Winter Palace Aftershort pass in front of the Peter Paul Fortress we docked disembarked and decided that the time was near for us to return to the Glimli ah 11 USPS 654-200 ISSN 0888-7020 SALT LAKE CITY UTAH TUESDAY MAY 31 1988 B011 Dance Practice The Salt Lake Buddhist Temple Bon Dance practice will be Those interested in viewing the film should call PBS stations in their area for specidate and time hotel but not until we lidlittle more sightseeing We had been told earlier that the Hermitage museum was located in several buildings around Alexander square The delegates decided to finish our walk around the Hermitage We passed the Winter Palace and two other connecting structures and then under an archway which not only spannedsidewalk but alsocanal The canal appeared to have been used asboat dock at one time few of the delegates noticed some steps leading down to the waters edge and even ventured down them Ve eventually found ourselves back at the end of the Alexander square exactly opposite to where we had disembarked earlier that day We walked along the square until our leader directed our attention to an automobile breezeway The breezeway itself was simplycovered entrance that had its canopy supported by twelve marble columns Interestingly enough however the columns were carved into the shapes of large Atlas-like men Each one of the figures appeared to be carved by hand without the use ofmechanical guide yet each of the twelve figures looked exactly alike After looking at the statues the delegation headed towards the large archway located on the square facing the Winter Palace It was here in 1912 that the October revolutionists began their bloody revolution by storming out from under the arch towards the Palacerear facade The archway led tocurved sidestreet where we saw for the first time children running around and playing with each other The side street opened onto Nievski Prospekt At this point our leaders decided that we should return to the bus stop as the mass transit system shuts down after midnight We began to walk back to the department store bus stop and were surprised to still see people walking up and down the streets despite the fact that it was late As we walked back we passed in front oflarge ornate structure which was layed out insemicircular pattern At the center waslarge green dome similar to the dome of the Nationcapital two large semi-open air wings were off to the side Directly in front wassmall fountain andpark We later discovered that this was the museum of Aetheism and Religion and had on displaynumber of religious icons symbols and books We decided that if time permitted we would return and visit the next day before we departed for our next city Unfortunately we did not have time the next lay To Be Continued Special Activities For All-Topaz Camp Reunion Sept 16-18 SAN FRANCISCOMachiko Naliamum Ola
