leave the building until seven years later After the short history discussion we were left to wander about the square to take pictures and then return to the bus After leaving the parking lot we were taken overbridge to the opposite bank of the Neva River where we could see the entire length of the Winter Palace One member of the delegation inquired about one of the many tall lamp posts that were along the bank of the river Our guide informed us that these posts directed ships traveling up and down the river From our vantage point at the river bank we could see the naval museum the Soviet naval headquarters known as The Admiralty and the smaller buildings that made up the Hermitage museum complex After reboarding the bus we then proceeded tolarge building that was behind the naval museum the Leningrad University The main building on the university grounds waslarge structure that was painted in red With white trim We were informed that the structure of the building was constructed out of twelve identical sections with each section housingdifferent college After leaving the university grounds we began our journey back to the hotel As we traveled back through the city our guide told us that all of the builclings within downtown Leningrad were all the same height because of building codes that prevented the construction of any high rise structures that may destroy the historical flavor in or near the historical district He also told us that the White Nights celebration would be that evening and that we should attend When we got back the delegation immediately had dinner and prepared for that evenings activities For me that meant writing postcards and going to bed few of the delegates however had their own plans One group in particular took our guideadvice and went to the White Nights celebration For those who went it was their first encounter with the Soviet people and the little known seldom described Soviet night life Several of the delegates who went quickly made friends who asked question after question about life in the United States Some of them even invited the delegates back to their homes where they spent the evening talking and asking questions about politics entertainment lifestyles and culture The experience was described as being fantastic awesome andust great Those who remained at the celebration had the time of their lives They mingled with the people and listened to the music One member of our delegation at one time during the partying was handed an unopened bottle of beer Because we had been forbidden to drink any he tried to give it away Speaking virtually no Russian he spent the next few minutes tapping people on the shoulder and asking them if they wanted the beer in his hand At one point someone did in fact take the beer but immediately returned it opened He eventually left the open bottle somewhere in the square While all this was going on another more adventuresome group of delegates rendezvoused with some Soviet people that they had met earlier in the lay when the tour was at the square These people were special in that we had been warned to avoid any contact with their kind the Blackmarketeers Our first contact with the Blackmarketeers presented the delegation with an interesting opportunity to meetgroup of individuals whom we were explicitly told to avoid during our orientation sessions But like most teenagers we didnlisten To us they werepart of the social climate of the Soviet Union that was new different and something to be experienced Like most individuals who are basically breaking the law the marketeers do their best to avoid being exposed They hide among the tourists both local and foreign at the more popular tourist attractions attempting to establishmeeting during which they could trade their goods For example the group thatfirst encountered met and negotiated withfew members of our delegation at the Winter Palace grounds earlier in the day Whenmeeting time was established it was usually at night within one of our rooms at the hotel to ensure secrecy in Moscow we later discovered what happens when this secrecy is broken What happens behind the door of the room is something that can be compared tofleamarket The marketeers brought shopping bags full of various flags military uniforms sweatshirts tee-shirts nested dolls and other crafted items usually sought out by tourists In exchange they wanted anything that was somehow connected with America Items that we were continually asked for sometimes on the street were tennis shoes blue jeans fashionable clothing audio tapes of pop music stereo cassette players and anything that had English on it We later joked about handing out pins and shirts that had Better dead than Red written on them The one thing about the marketeers thathad concerns about was not only the possibility of theft but also of possible Violence assaid before trading illegally wasnew thing for most of us Asresult when the marketeers becamelittle pushy and uncompromising became increasingly worried and attempted to hasten their departure One note during all of my blackmarket encounters no form of violence or threats from the marketeers themselves ever took place In many wayswas glad thatdid for minutes after the marketeers had left my room one of them returned and asked if he could come in and trade with me some more quietly refused to let him in ashad just dressed for bed He gave up after about ten minutes The next day however passed him on my way down to breakfast He looked as if he had futilely spent the night in the hotel or close to it trying to trade his goods Inway felt sorry for him One humorous note to this when my roommate returned from his trading that night he had to announce who he was beforewould let him in to the room the Soviet hotels donhave peepholes To Be Continued Ichlmatsu leogl CORINNE -Ichimatsu Nisogi 70 died Jan 12 inBrigham hospital Born July 13 1917 in Honeyville son
