Show Friday, December 9, 1933 Chronicle - Page Ten 3 Use med student as mascot for U. volunteer himself as a replacement for the Ute as Utah's mascot Ken Hutchinson education, biology Senior-physi- cal Editor I've read a lot of letters in the Chronicle Pollution, not fog, threatens valley during my stay at the U., but Daniel Parkinson's letter tops them all. Parkinson's insults to a whole religion and its ceremonial temple dress has got to be the stupidest of them all. I would like to follow his lead with an even more appropriate replacement of the Ute mascot How about the Runnin' Parkinsons? After all, he does represent a large group, the School of Medicine. We can dress him up in his little white coat, name tag and stethoscope-arounhis little neck to enthusiasm and pride in Utah's inspire athletic events. I'm inspired that Daniel Parkinson will d Editor: I would like to comment on the article "U. meteorologist searches for solution to S.L.'s winter haze" (Dec. 5), which research by describes cloud-seedin- g claims that Fukuta Fukuta. Norihiko Geneva Steel's main interest in the experiments is clean air, and that they cnose '"the proper way to go into the future ... a smart move indeed.'" I'm sorry, but seeding clouds will do two things, neither of them being "proper." First, seeding will cause polluted fog to precipitate tome ground. Second, seeding will cause the remainder of the fog to blow into someone else's backyard. In fact, since moisture condenses and turns to snow as it rises over the Wasatch Range, isnt it possible that "the greatest snow on earth" might become "the greatest polluted snow on earth'? Oddly, Salt Lake Qty also gets its water from those canyons. If Geneva Steel really wants cleaner air, it should install pollution controls which will reduce its emissions. Currently, its emissions exceed Environmental Protection Agency standards, which is incomprehensible considering its contribution to the pollution in the valley. Of course, the "fog" (pollution) problem is not solely the fault of Geneva Steel. Weather patterns automobiles and other industries contribute substantially to the problem. Denver also experiences inversions similar to ours. As a Denver has taken steps to community remedy the problem. For instance, during the winter months, you can purchase only gasoline mixed with alcohol or other additives which reduce polluting automobile emissions. The reductions are measurable, and additives do no harm to the vehicles. If we are truly interested in solving this problem, the community should work together to actually reduce polluting emissions, not treat the symptom-den- se brown "fog." Seeding the cloud is like a medical doctor giving painkillers to a per- son with a diasease: It does nothing to solve the problem, but sure gives the patient the illusion things are getting bet- ter.
