Seventh and eighth grade drama classes presented "A Christmas Carol" before hundreds of parents at the Dec. 14 performance. Park City High School's academic decathlon team scored a big win in Kamas on Monday. Coaches John Krenkel and Linda Preston led the nine-member team to a district victory vic-tory in nearly every category. Krenkel said the competition was more of a practice since Park City has the only 'official' team in the district that comprises five area high schools. "For a young team we did exceptionally excep-tionally well," Krenkel said. The competition gets really tough from here, he said, we have a lot of work to do. Team members are divided into three academic categories: Jerry, Wenner, Jeff Howard and Ryan McDaniel (over 3.75 grade point average category); Greg Hanscom, Dana Gress and Brice Dodson (3.0 to 3.75 grade point average category) ; and Jennifer Putz, Chuck Sharp and Gwynne Adams (below 3.0 category). The Kamas competition pitted Park City against Wasatch, Morgan, South Summit, Union and Altamont. Teams were tested on ten academic areas such as micro-economics and social studies (history of the 1920s). Topics change from year to year. Most of Park City's team is made-up made-up of high school juniors, Krenkel said, and preparing for tougher competition com-petition in mid-January will be a challenge. Following the January decathlon, the state contest will be held in St. George in February. State winners will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the national competition. SLCC offers the uncommon course Salt Lake Community College winter quarter classes fill a need, yet are quite unusual. For example, in the School of Continuing Con-tinuing and Community Education there is a class for people wanting to provide first aid for small animals (and another class for large animal first aid). Then there is one for people to become familiar with building inspection in-spection and the Uniform Building Code. And another on civilian aircraft air-craft maintenance practices. Winter quarter begins Jan. 2 and the registration deadline is Dec. 29. High-tech teacher nominees sought The White House is interested in identifying excellent science and mathematics teachers who work with 7th to 12th graders in public or private schools. Recipients receive the Presidential Presiden-tial Award, a trip to Washington, D.C. a $7,500 National Science Foundation Foun-dation grant for their school and gifts from business and industry. Nominations come from students, parents, teachers or anyone who knows about a teacher's qualifications. qualifica-tions. Awardees are selected on the basis of their teaching performance, experience and education and outside out-side professional activities. They must have spent at least five years teaching science or mathematics half-time or more in a middle school or junior or senior high school. Address nominations to PAESMT, NSTA Special Projects, 5112 Berwyn Road, 3rd Floor, College Park, MD 20740 by March 1.
