View drama department takes championship The Mountain View High School Drama Department under the direction of Charles Lynn Frost, captured the 1st Place Sweepstakes honors for the Large School Division recently at the Utah Shakespearean Festival's High School Shakespearean Acting Competition. The annual event is held the last weekend of September -on the campus of Southern Utah State College. The tournament has grown to include a total of 50 schools from Utah, California, Nevada, and Arizona. " ' Mountain View captured the 1st place trophy with a' score of 94 points, out of a possible 100 points. Several Mountain View students also garnered special recognition awards. UNIVERSITY MALL Red Ribbon Week activities highlight drug epidemic Red Ribbon Week activities planned throughout Utah County during October 21-28 will highlight high-light the battle to prevent drug : abuse. : . Blaine Willes has signed a proclamation in support of the event and said "I encourage our citizens to participate in alcohol al-cohol and other drugs education and prevention activities, making a visible statement that we are strongly committed to a drug-free community." FAMILY CARNIVAL Following Red Ribbon Sabbath on Sunday, Oct. 21, the week's events will begin with a family carnival car-nival at Utah Valley Community College. The theme for the carnival is "Natural Highs A thru Z: Fun Alternatives to Substance Abuse. The carnival will go from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Wasatch Mental Health, UVCC, and the Utah County Department ' of Substance Abuse. It is free to the public Family members will have "hands-on experience" with 26 alternative al-ternative ways to get high. Local merchants are volunteering their time to demonstrate these activities.. ac-tivities.. Included in this year's carnival are booths on kite-flying, dancing, face painting, insect collecting, col-lecting, parties, photography, drawing caricatures, arts and crafts, plus many more. Families also will be able to watch performing groups from the community. University names Orem woman to honor society Jennifer Parchesky of Orem, has been named to the Scho-Lea chapter of the Mortar Board honor society at Trinity University. Univer-sity. The organization works to help develop and stimulate service, ser-vice, scholarship and leadership in its members. Parchesky, the daughter of Carol and Joseph Parchesky, is a senior studying English. Scheduled groups include the Sunshine Generation, the Utah Academy of Performing Arts, Kempo Karate, and the Utah County K-9 Corp. The first 1000 children who attend will receive a free trick or treat bag, provided by the Utah County Department of Substance Abuse. Citizens are asked to display red ribbons on their car antennas, around trees and in prominent places. T-shirts, ribbons, buttons nd stickers with the HOT TO NOT logo are available through the County Department of Abuse. Anyone with questions or ideas is welcome to call Maren Sorensen, County Red Ribbon Coordinator at Utah County Department of Substance Abuse 37-8427, 8-5 p.m. " "Wear your ribbons!" says Sorensen, "We want the Nation and State to know that the citizens in Provo and Utah County Coun-ty have joined together in the battle bat-tle against drugs!" Personal efforts can be enhanced en-hanced by tying red ribbons on trees, gardens and front doors and having a red food breakfast, lunch or dinner one day next week. Activities will culminate with a Red Ribbon Sports Weekend. High school players are encouraged en-couraged to wear red, and BYU football players to wear red patches. There will be moments of silence at the games in support of the fight to prevent drug abuse. This marks Mountain View's fifth Sweepstakes Championship Champion-ship at the prestigious Shakespearean Acting Competition. Competi-tion.
