October 17. 1990 XI SPARKS project SPARKS, Scera Park Elementary Ele-mentary Super Science lab, will become a reality with a grant for $602.30 from City ofOrem Teaching Teach-ing Excellence Awards. . The project, under the direction of Sylvia A. Bennett, fourth grade teacher, is designed to spark the imaginations of students through a terrific hand-on elementary school science lab. "All the students of the school will benefit from such a lab, currently, cur-rently, that is about 550 students," says Bennett. "Gifted science students stu-dents from Orem High School will be involved with helping to set up the lab, in assisting in instruction and demonstration." A committee of teachers from New dean at Utah Valley Community College's new dean for the School of Allied Health and General Studies at the College will contribute con-tribute significantly to the future direction of allied health and general studies at UVCC," said Dr. Lucille Stoddard in making the announcement. MILLER Erik Knutzen completes infantry school Marine Lance Cpl. Erik Knutzen, Knut-zen, a resident of Orem, has completed com-pleted the School of Infantry. During the course conducted at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif., Knutzen received classroom instruction and participated in field exercises involving infantry tactics, the construction and camouflage of fighting positions, the use of mines and other demolitions, and intra-company communications equipment. . A 1985 graduate of Kentwood High School, Kent, Wash., he joined the Marine Crops Reserves in March 1990. Herbert Flower graduates from signaler course Army Reserve Private Herbert Her-bert C. Flower has graduated from the combat signaler course at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Ga. The course provided instruction instruc-tion on field wire construction, troubleshooting field wire lines, operation of field type switchboard and frequency , modulated J(FM) radio communications com-munications and systems in combat com-bat and combat service support. At present time, John Crandall, principal of Scera Park; Robert Tomsik of the Orem High Science Department; George Kelly, and Mrs. Bennett of the Scera Park faculty are directing the program. The funds will be used to purchase pur-chase badly needed items to supplement sup-plement the equipment already at Scera Park.
