Show Mountain View claims 27-13 region win, Tiger gridders fall to Bingham 28-12 Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday October 5, 1988 page 7 . By Cathe Owens Mountain View hart a 1niv ctm-t against West Jordan Friday, giving the Jaguars their first lead of the season before they turned around in the second half to blow the game open At Dinitl.nn . . ii-u. n uiiigiuuu rrmay evening, the Miners earned their Homecoming victory toppling the Orem Tigers 28-12. "We weren't ready at the begin ning of the game," explained Bruin head coach Steve Park, "we made some bad mistakes, but we gradual- a 1A J.I A . a ly Duiii me momentum, and our confidence." con-fidence." The first mistake was when Mountain view s defense left a hnia just big enough for West Jordan's Jeff VanLeeuwen 10 tina running room 80 yards, all the way to paydirt on the first play from scrimmage. Mountain View answered the Jaguar score with a drive that moved mov-ed as far as the West Jordan 16, but the defense forced the Bruins to set tle for a Benson field goal. Late in tne second quarter the Rruins went ahead when auartprhack Scott Albrecht found Matt Hawkins in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown pass. The Bruin drive was set ud when Brad Maneum returned West Jordan's punt 14 yards to the Jaguar's 31-yard line. Mark Fulton moved the ball to the 10 on three carries, car-ries, then Dave Whimpey carried the ball to the three ready for the go-ahead go-ahead score. Benson's PAT gave the Bruins a 10-7 half time lead. An eieht-olav Bruin drive started the second half of play, highlighted by a 17-yard AiDrecm-to-Kees-Harward pass to get out of a second-and-25 hole. On third-and-eieht Albrecht hit Matt Hawkins for long yardage, but the catch was ruled incomplete because the receiver was out of bounds. On fourth-and-eight from the 19-yard line Kevin Benson booted his second field goal of the game with the ball just inching in-ching over the bar for a 13-7 Bruin lead with 8:37 to go in the third period. A turnover fiesta set up me next Bruin score after Mountain View took a Jaguar cunt at their own 45. A fum ble in the backfield on the first play gave west Jordan control on tne Bruin 40, then on the Jaguar's first nlav from scrimmage Quarterback Jeff VanLeeuwen tossed up a pass that Brum Sean Lorschieder in tercepted to get control on the 20. Fulton took a handoff and raced 80 yards behind good Bruin blocking to score with just over 5 minutes remaining re-maining in the third quarter. Ben son s extra kick recorded a 20-7 Bruin lead. Less than two minutes later the Bruins hit paydirt again when defensive defen-sive back Kevin Benson snatched a Jaguar pass and darted 25 yards to score for a 27-7 lead. West Jordan added one more score just into the final quarter when Darin Fowlks intercepted an Albrecht pass and dodged the Bruin defenders for a 65 touchdown run. A bad snap on the extra kick forced a conversion attempt, at-tempt, but the pass sailed over the end zone and fell incomplete. Bruin running back Mark Fulton had a great game according to head coach Park. "We've known he had the m, . ' -v" - ; ' ' WMmvmmm tlZ. Hawkins ended up with the reception for Mountain Moun-tain View's go-ahead score. Cathe Owens photo potential to be an All-State player since he played as a freshman," Park explained, "and now he's finally realizing his potential." ; Kevin Benson was also a leading force in the Bruin win, leading the scoring with two field-goals, an interception-return touchdown, and three PAT kicks. The Bruins host American Fork Friday at 7:30 in the lighted Bruin Bowl. BINGHAM 28, OREM 12 Bingham racked up a 2M lead in the first half of play Friday evening against an Orem team that was having hav-ing trouble executing. "We got ourselves into a hole with penalties in certain situations," explained Orem head coach Tom Rabb, "and that stopped us from keeping any momentum momen-tum going." The Tigers couldn't get anything started in the first half, but put two impressive scoring drives together in the final two periods to trim the lead to 28-12. Penalties plagued the Tigers, and one came close to setting up another Bingham touchdown near the beginning begin-ning of the third quarter when a 15-yarder gave the Miners control on the Tiger 36 to start their drive. Two plays later, however, Brian Aiken fell on a Bingham fumble on the Tiger 30 to begin the first Orem scoring drive. Matt Harding raced for big Orem yardage on five carries on an 11-play drive. Bryan Rowley hit Blake Hendry Hen-dry in the end zone to cap the drive and put the Tigers on the scoreboard with 3:38 to go in the third quarter. The extra point attempt failed leaving leav-ing the score at 28-6. Orem's second touchdown came four minutes into the final quarter when Harding, after gaining 25 yards in two carries, muscled the last foot over the line to score. A 21-yard Rowley-to-Chad-Lewis pass set up Harding's scoring carry. Failing on a conversion attempt, Orem's score remained re-mained 28-12. The Tigers host West Jordan Friday Fri-day at 3:00. Previous to this season the highest number of goals scored by the Cougars was 10. "We just love to score," said Mike Bodon who was responsible for the first two goals of the afternoon. John Allred, of Bountiful, Utah followed Bodon's shots with two powerful blasts from outside the penalty box that left the keeper standing and the fans cheering during the first half of action. , . "We have a very powerful attack," at-tack," said BYU head coach Dave Woolley, "When the ball goes to the wing we send it back across the goal mouth for a header. When we attack iup the middle we get the ball onto the t,f eet of the forwards so they can turn and shoot." The Cougars did a lot of turning and shooting in their 1 3-0 victory. vic-tory. A diving header from forward Robert Edwards (American Fork, Utah) put the ball in the net to start the second half action for the Cougars. Matt Schuck found the net next with a backward volley made famous by Brazilian midfielder Pele. Edwards found the net three more times for a total of four goals on the night. Schuck placed two more to the net for a hat trick (three goals) while Matt Ostler, a defender for the Cougars, and Will Burke each placed excellent shots past the keeper. "We knew when we came to Pro-vo Pro-vo that this was going to be the toughest game of the season," said Boise State coach Trent Felton, "They are an impressive lot, and they run at you all day." Though the score did not indicate the play of the Broncos, Bron-cos, Felton said they played well. "You just can't expect to stay with a team as disciplined and strong as BYU. We played hard and did some good things on the field. BYU hosted previously undefeated unde-feated Western State College of Denver Friday afternoon at Haws field. "Lately we have been tied or behind until the closing minutes of our matches," said BYU coach Dave Woolley, "but this afternoon we ac- curatelv attacked their goal from the whistle and put two goals into the net early in the match." The soccercats used a skillful coordination of teamwork and in-. in-. dividual performance to rout the War-riors8-l. Tuesday the Cougar soccer team hosted the University of Utah, and is preparing to face homecoming rival Colorado State on Friday evening, 7:30 p.m. at Haws Field on University Universi-ty Avenue in Provo. Saturday morning the team will participate in the BYU Homecoming parade where they will be featured playing a small game of soccer with two moving goals while teammates perform soccer tricks and pass out posters to parade-goer's. four-wheel ATVs.
