Show Co coalville alville district dietric t similar alv 11 to labarge big gas field 17 R R dorland devils slide andrew motzel and J H I 1 roberts of this city were visitors tort to labarge wyo last sunday to ob tain firsthand first hand information relative to the big gas well and the following article Is the result of a pers onil interview with them by the edor of the bee the well was drilled by manning martin drilling company contract drillers drillars dr illers using rotary equipment for the frontier petroleum company composed of rod burnam and his associates in the burnam exploration company of los angeles calif the well is located in the SEA A SE 14 SW A 14 of section 1 edwn township 28 23 north range west Su sublette bIette county wyoming or about 16 miles north and 7 miles west of the town of labarge wyo and on the labarge anticline and ashoot distance east cast of the darby fault this is a large thrust fault from the I 1 west the elevation at the collar of he well is about feet and trie tile depth of the well is beeten feet encountering large production of natural gas in the lower wall creek sand this being the lower sand in the contier frontier formation and corre lates with our Co coalville alville sand locally named the long wall sand at the time this well blew in october they were circulating 11 pound mud per gallon this world have a specific gravity of 13 taking I 1 the weight of water as one thus we have which is equivalent t to pound pressure per square inch at the bottom of the pie well to this must be added the circulating cu or pump pressure which normally Is from 1000 to ua pounds and when the drill had bad penetrated into the sand only 2 feet the pressure and quantity of gas was sufficient to blow out all of the mud in the hole against the above described pressure and the quantity of gas production has been estimated by various petroleum engineers between forty million and a hundred million cubic feet per day at the time the above gentlemen visited the well it was under control with the proper valves etc and mud was being pumped in under pressure and their announced pro cedore was to continue pumping heavy mud until the weight of the solution was increased to a point where it would control the gas pressure many wells have been drilled in this district before and some or 04 them within a very short distance from the above location but it I 1 is reported that this is the first well in this district drilled into the frontier Fion tier formation on structure this should be encouraging ging to the citizens of Co alville and especially the stockholders of the long wall petroleum corporation when we take into consideration that this same sand is the objective of the long wall well these gentlemen are very confident that it will take ake t less than additional feet to penetrate the same sand in the long wall well this well is s located in the foot foote hills on the east slope of the wyoming mountain range which in reality Is a northern extension of the wasatch range and the distance from the long wall well to the wasatch range being comparable to the distance of the frontier I 1 I 1 petroleum company well from the lWy wyoming oming range we can reasonably i expect the productiveness of the and porosity of the sands to I 1 be comparable because of the i lar distance from the shore I 1 line I 1 ne a at ti time ame of deposition the above sea elevation of the frontier petroleum I 1 i well where they penetrated the gas sand is about 2500 feet while the same sand in the lons long wall well will be penetrated at about i feet above sea level showing about feet difference in the structural elevation in favor of the long wall well the eastern slope of the wasatch 1 and wyoming range of mountains is the western terminus of the sedimentary deposits and oil bearing formations of the state of wyoming and as the formations were deposited at the same time and upon the same horizontal plane and under comparatively the same local condition with reference to ass ONN A aad i shore line deposits it is s 0 only ly good logic to expect similar u at both wells referred to 0 aided vided they are both loca located te d on closed structure and this has been proven beyond reason ab doubt EDITORS NOTE vw ve e take a great deal of pride in presenting the above interview to our i wide vide circle of readers clean and unbiased the similarity of the geological conditions surrounding the two wells Is the first that we have been able to get that brings clearly to our readers attention a basis of thought from solid foundation that is particularly worthy of every readers reader matured thought the labarge field has been under observation by various oil operators for over 20 years the present operators are interested in oil and not in gas and no doubt that is the reason why they sold the controlling interest last saturday to the texas oil company the consideration was not made public we judge from the rapidity of the transaction t that hat the texas company was very much interested in closing we wish to refer all those interested in the above facts to U S G S bulletin geology and geography of a portion of lincoln county wyoming by alfred reginald schultz 1914 before lincoln county was subdivided sub divided |
