Show UTAH nc DEBS GROW IN FAVOR on washington southwestern utah with its remarkable cedar breaks and bryce canyon and its culminating attraction zion park Is just coming into proper recognition on account of its wonderful scenery says the director of the national park service in his annual report to the secretary of the interior he adds As a result travel to these sections will undoubtedly increase very rapidly during the next few years and provision must be made to meet these travel demands in the general road budget which you will submit to congress estimates have davs been included for three major pi ejects contemplating an expenditure of nearly the present entrance road must be improved to protect it from river encroachment and several miles must be widened it is plan planned ned to construct six miles of additional road ti through rough to the narrows a strikingly beautiful section of the canyon which will op en to travel many additional inspire ing and wonderful views him rim proposed aw it is further proposed to con a road from the floor of the valley to the rim the location of the road has not been definitely decided on but it is believed a sati satisfactory stac and feasible location can be found its approximate ae length nath would be about 7 5 miles this road will provide a rim entrance to the park giving the tourist even more wonderful views of the canyon than it is possible to secure from the floor dur mir ing th the hot summer months it will wil provi provide de a high line drive from cedar city to cedar breaks thence to zion park by a proposed road connecting the park road with the new now cedar breaks road zion national park has grown definitely in popularity as the park has enjoyed greatly increased travel having entertained visitors from nearly every state in the union while rail and motor stage travel has increased slightly over last year the large increase resulted from motor travel development retarded the park is in the initial stags stage of develop development me tit little in fit the way of extensive improvements has has been possible under the annual eions of 1 10 which the park has received ands funds tor for improvement work have been usually expended in repairing damage to the present road five miles in length which parallels the virgin river heavy rainfall this year resulted in considerable damage to the road the bridge in the sand slide blid e being partially washed out and the bridge near wylle wylie camp having been washed out twice the flood character of the river also causes con sid erable damage necessitating a comparatively heavy maintenance charge the park s sixteen miles of trail have been maintained in better condition this year and possibly on this account have been more used than in previous years the trail to the east rim and the one to the weep rock and the narrows have been the most popular stockmen object the director also discusses the grand canyon of the colorado and with respect to the proposed prest dent a forest and north rim development says A suggestion was made by a we well ll 11 known writer that the kalbac forest be perpetually reserved and called the president a tore t I 1 the idea ug W ani aiu VS 6 6 d ed in a storm of protest from cattle 1 and sheep men who us use th the range west and north of that 0 occupied c cup I 1 ed ty the grand canyon cattle company also from the county which derives its revenue from the forest this caused the whole project to fall and nothing was accomplished although a bill was introduced to designate a section ot of kaibab forest the prest dent 8 forest and mahe make it a game and timber sanctuary to remain under the forest service Is it orthy conception the president s forbat 1 Is a noble conception and should ultimately be established at any rate the ameri can people should see to it that a por per tion of this wonderful forest Is pro pre served forever in its natural state either by adding a reasonable area to the national park or by having it reserved under forest service jurisdiction while access to the north rim from utah points Is being constantly improved and it is likely that a chain of hotels camps and lodges with ade quate transportation facilities will soon be built and while there are magnificent canyon forest and wild life scenes to be observed from the north rim tor for many years the south rim 1 open all year with a railroad into the park itself with long established accommodations for tourists and with other natural advantages will deserve and receive the largo large share of federal appropriations for the park |
