emerson hough the out ot of door life editor edito of the saturday evening post who bad had been studying the north rim of the grand canyon edmond heller a new york naturalist who accompanied theodora in one of the big yellowstone park cars and came to hurricane from the grand canyon via antelope after a good dinner at the reeve hotel a meeting was held on the lawn in front of the hotel which was well attended by an enthusiastic bunch of hurricane boosters boasters bo hon hen S wilson imlay was chairman of the meeting after a lew few preliminary remarks in which he welcomed the visitors he hel introduced mr mather mr mather spoke of the rough road between hurricane and the alabab forest saying the wear and tear and discomfort and the loss of time in traveling over such roads were almost entirely prohibitory to travel he ile complimented the people on what they had accomplished but told them they would have to do still more if they wished to remain on the map ho he called attention to the travel to the grand canyon being routed another way because ol 01 the rough h road saying the people of hurricane never would have this travel unless the road was improved he wag was anxious that a loop be made of the travel so that the tourist could take in zion canyon bryce canyon and the cedar breaks either going to the grand canyon via hurricane or returning that way he had been talking with mr air heaton of pipe spring to see it the old tort fort at that place could be axed fixed up as it was originally with alth gates in place etc and fixed up as a comfortable stopping place mr air heaton was willing that this be done and mr slather mather proposed that a national monument be made ot of it he advised the people to forget all about state and county lines to go ahead and do the mather was heartily applauded he lett left his check for the purpose staled stated before leaving hurricane emerson hough endorsed the remarks in arks of mr mather he said the greatest aids to civilization today are good roads and good schools both are essentially necessary it we are to progress he was very greatly interested te in this western country and was now engaged in writing a story some talk about railroad extensions toward these points but advised the people not to place too much reliance on this as he lie did not believe there would eoon soon be any rail road extension auto from bright angel point to cape royal here where the most magnificent view of the canyon may be obtained mr air petty told of what hat had already been done in the improvement of J roads by the local
