sunday night full of hope that their wishes will be at least partly complied with As to sevier county commissioner geo peterson states that the alternative of having the primary road go either over clear creek canyon or over marysvale Marys vale panguitch and kanab makes it al most sure that we will get the road paved at t least f from r 0 in the sugar factory liya tt a point n north 0 rth of salana and that nork ork will be started abo about in april provided the county votes rubout in order to obtain two or three times as much from the laie federal government this of course can be considered almost a foregone conclusion as we cannot afford to lose this chance of getting gettin 9 our main road paved with avith so gener dus a federal assistance the work could he be laid out so as to have it completed in two years which would bring a payroll to the county for two seasons and occupation for our men and teams before meeting with tile the state road bohi commission mission and mr finch the delegates of the six counties held a caucus geo peterson acting as chairman and robert hinckley of mt pleasant as secretary A resolution was vas passed asking the state road road commission to route the primary mar highway from salt lake through nephi and thence by way of fountain green manti richfield sevier marysvale Marys vale junction panguitch fount carmel and kanab tile the idea is that as a primary highway the road would continue on into arizona through fredonia and pipe springs returning to utah by way probably of short creek and zion national oark dark and so to st george As a rider to the resolution it is asked that it if tile the primary road cannot be continued through the five counties it shall at least run as far as sevier thence to cove fort through gh aie creek cannon over the present forest road and then to st george by way of beaver and cedar in that event it is asked that the road as nl mentioned through piute garfield and kane counties be designated as a secondary federal highway the resolution also asks that the roads through spanish fork canyon to lo thistle and thence by way of fairview and mt pleasant and also the road from price through emery county and down salina canyon to salina and richfield be designated as secondary highways the caucus appointed two committees one of them composed of chairman george peterson state senator H C tebbs of garfield and state senator wm win Seega liller of kane to meet with the state road commission preliminary to the official meeting the other composed of senators and tebbs and william owens leonard mausen representative S M jordansen Jor gansen J M peterson and commissioner joseph F peterson to meet with the salt lake commercial club this meeting however had to be postponed for some later ti time me because cause the officers of the club to be visited were all out of town in the meeting with the state road commissioners the committee went vent over the road situation in ill southern utah in detail and argued that it served a large proportion of 0 the population in the state in the sanpete and sevier valleys further ti they sit ey pointed out that on this route are situated bryce canyon an unexcelled view of zion national park from the rim of the basin instead of from beneath and the grand canyon other scenic wonders of southern utah said to compare with these were named and it was urged that the tourist has not seen attractions until he has visited these places this it was held lie he would not do it if he were rushed through the state by the very shortest route north and south with out any deviation tho the formal meeting of the road delegation with the state road commission was held in the afternoon in the board room at the capitol B J finch district engineer of the united states bureau of public roads was present and was asked to explain the federal law commissioner george peterson of sevier being in the chair mr finch explaining that he hb could speak only asa as a citizen of utah and that for the designation of tho the federal highway they must look to the state r road oad commission pointed out that at present the st state ate records indicate miles of highway in utah of ellla amount 1680 miles could be designated as federal highways under the act there is no difference he asserted so far as you are concerned between t een primary and secondary roads it is possible to designate a federal system of highways in utah on this mileage that will serve 95 per cent of the population of the state you can place every confidence confluence in the state highway commission so to designate the system as to serve the best interests of the people while no recommendation has as yet been made I 1 know in general what the state road commission has in mind as a total of the system the matter of primary and secondary highways Is Is not a matter of importance the primary roads must form a real interstate system in designating primary roads the secretary of agriculture will take into account the length of the roads is as well as the population served they are not entirely for through state travel but other things being considered it is well to remember that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line the same considerations will govern to a certain extent with secondary roads it is not as necessary that they connect with secondary roads road as the state line as it is in connection with the primary roads chairman N C poulson of the state road comal commission sion in behalf of that body said it Is not yet ready to announce its designation of roads roada but believed that a system could bel be s arranged that would serve 90 percent of the people judge H N hayes 0 of richfield michil eld mr young and others took part in t this his discussion |
