bodies of sanpete San pete sevier plute garfield and ka Kario o counties for the purpose of organizing gan izing the salt lake grand canyon highway association J 11 II baker president of the richfield commercial club acted as chairman J W robinson of marysvale Marys vale as secretary and W D rishel manager of the touring bureau and executive secretary of the utah state automobile association as adviser mr rishel first advised those assembled of the fact that the local council of the utah state automobile ns association is about to open a permanent richfield office of the association cia tion the office will be located in in tho the johnston hotel and mr F X carron will take care of the secretarial duties the office will be fully equipped with maps log g books and other helps or tourists and all the knaps booklets and inform information atio n will be given to out of state tourists absolutely free of charge after announcing this news mr rishel gave an exhaustive and clear explanation of alms and purposes of the salt lake grand canyon highway association ho he spoke anth enthusiastically usi asti cally on the most unique and won von darful attractions of southern utah which should make this part of the state the mecca for tourists yet of the tourists who traveled in and through utah in the last season only visited bryce canyon zion national park grand canyon and cedar breaks our tour four scenic wonders and this for the reason that there are no decent roads connecting these places the distance tor for instance between betwee ii bryce canyon and zion alon park is is only forty four miles as the crow flies but tho the tourist who rants to see both places has to travel miles over nearly impassable toads roads of paramount importance therefore is a series of new connecting roads between the main points of attraction and it ought to be the main object of the proposed organization bation to secure such roads the designation of the route from salt lake ake to the scenic wonders is of secondary consideration and this part ot of the road program can be left for later developments the first objective will bo be to get the connecting roads your scenic wonders are worthless without these roads it if tourists find good roads they will tell others and one satisfied tourist will be worth morth more than worth of advertisements to bring more tourists get the connecting roads and you will get the tourists more of them than you can possibly take care of the state road commission and the governor will gladly operate cooperate co with you they are in a receptive mood for constructing the roads if they are asked so to do roads are built by votes you are voters go out anti and exercise your privilege ago mr rishel submitted a draft of constitution and bylaws by laws which was thoroughly discussed representative of kane county and johnson of manti cairell ot 11 C nelson of richfield J W robinson of marysvale Marys vale henderson of panguitch and others participating in the discussion and the constitution finally was accepted as follows nnie this organization aaion hall bo be as tile the salt lake grand way vay association objects tho the objects of this shall be to develop the salt lake grand canyon ilig highway hway until it be comes one of the principal scenic motor routes of america to secure this result it is deemed most important to first bring about a system of highways connecting bryce canyon grand canyon I 1 Z zion ion national park and cedar breaks in the shortest and most feasible manner giving consideration to points of interest to tourists along the various proposed connections that the selection of these various connections should come under the proper state and county and federal 0 officials the officers of this association pledge themselves to N work ork for the above objects first and continue their efforts until this work is accomplished shed to adopt and construct a suitable system ot ol road signs to furnish suitable road maps and literature to tourists to take all any other action deemed necessary to further touting over this highway membership member ship hii any individual ic ie siding in ht san pete sevier plute garfield and kane counties interested in the objects of this association may become members upon the payment ot ol an all annual fee of ono one dollar officers cerl the officers of this association shall consist of one director from each county who shall select sole ct a president first and second vice tice presidents and treasurer from the directorate this board shall have power to carry out the objects of this thia association J meetings 4 special meetings of the directors may be called by the president at any time and aust be called by the president upon inquest of a majority of the directors annual meetings ot the membership chip shall bo be held each year on oil a date and at a place selected by the directors official roud tile the designation of an all lial route shall not bo be made until after the connecting links between bryce canyon graid canyon zion national park and ceda cedat breaks have been constructed and open to travel amendment this constitution and bylaws by bv laws are subject to amendments and additions I 1 by the directors or members in convention assembled directors and officers elected as stated at the top of this article and every director will org anlo a membership committee and a membership drive in ill ills his respective county nearly fifty members joined the association immediately after the bylaws had been adopted mr rishel danela dv elt at some length ou on the park to park highway as proposed by the national paik to park highway association which will hold its annual convention in salt lake city june julie 16 and 17 distributing maps of the intended highway he sever severely elV criticized the association tor placing the route in fit such a way that utah is entirely neglected and urged all organizations of the southern part of utah to send delegates to the convention to oppose the proposition in it the present form and to insist amsi st that our state be given proper consideration from the sentiments espres expressed so in tile the meeting it can call be judged that large delegations will go to salt lake for the convention to tor lor the aims explained by mr rishel to have tile the paik to park highway association so lation rise above its present ap if patent selfish motives and get gel behind a mo movement ement for the betterment of the entire highway s system stam of the west giving due consideration to the commercial value of such highways and at the same time thile conn connecting act up all our national parks |
