Show V HOLDS GOOD POSITION IN washington continued from last week bec use the latter method in ascending but have several limes walked down i PI Fl oever if one feels equal to the task it is much more desirable to use the stairs either cither in going up or coming coining down be because causa of the many inscriptions on the various stones comprising the monument the stones are arc memorials to the first president and were contributed by nearly every state in the union several cities and numerous lodges societies and other organizations I 1 noticed one stone which bore the inscription s crip tion of the territory of deseret at the top of the monument there is a landing and two windows NIn dows on oil each of the four sides from any one of these on oil a clear da a wonderful view comprising miles and miles of territory can be obtained what to my mind is the most notable place of beauty and interest in the capital is the library of congress I 1 have been there numberless times limes to read because I 1 can obtain there many iN western estern papers including abl deseret news of salt lake city to secure copyrights authors and publishers must furnish copies of their books to this institution all of these are available for public perusal and one can imagine the variety of subjects covered by the volume of this vast collection the library is a three story building of granite erected at a cost of over six bix million dollars the mural paintings statuary and decorations in its interior are wor worthy ly of the highest praise tile the smithsonian institution and the two national museums niu the old anti and the new are beautiful buildings in themselves they contain specimens of practically every known form of animal and plant life minerals cur curios los antiques and art some of the recent additions to tile the collection aro are many trophies captured during the past war scenes of that conflict depicted on the canvas by famous modern artists portraits of all the generals and men of repute who participated therein aid specimens of the equipment used by our army the pioneer trans at lantic alantic aircraft will be permanently located there I 1 have spent many a half day in these buildings viewing their priceless collections being of a naturally autistic temperament pe I 1 have found great pleasure in visiting tile the corcoran gallery of art the gallery was endowed to tile the public for a collection or fine art in tho the year it contains beautiful specimens of oil and watercolor water color paintings ain tings by past and present artists ancient and modern sculpture abod other works ol of art at present alio there e is a collection of over tour four hundred masterpieces by contemporary modern artists the numerous places of ditc interest aest near the city and tho the excursions tol to various other cities and places of 0 note have furnished me with an excellent opportunity for spending holidays and add spare time to my own advantage in ill education and amusement use mount vernon the home of george washington and the location of his tomb is sixteen miles from this city the mansion is kept just as it was left by the immortal george and lady martha I 1 have stood in reverence before the tomb where side by side they are sleeping the last great grea sleep anti and have come away thankful that I 1 have had the opportunity of making a image to the home bome and last resting place of the father of his county As a tribute to lo his sacred memory all boats plying the pause a moment opposite op posits the estate to toll the bell midway between washington washingto and mount vernon is situated the old town of alexandria va ila wash ington himself was inas instrumental in founding the town and his first work as a surveyor was vas the laying out of the streets of that place some 0 of tile the historical buildings of noto note are the olid braddock addock Dr house t alie lie headquarters of the famous british general during the revolution and christ chinch where here washington woi won hipped while ho he resided at mount vernon as did also robert E lee the famous confederate general gene a while living nearby when I 1 visited I 1 this house of worship I 1 deemed it a great privilege to occupy foia 1 few moments tile tho pews originally used by these famous americans arlington the national cemetery Is another beautiful interesting anti and historic In place here is general lees mansion and here lie the remains rem abis of thousands who fought and laid down their lives that this country of ours might live from the sculptured monuments erected to great generals to the llie small numbered slabs for unknown privates they one and all bear mute testimony to the fact that men will tile die for liberty and right during the past summer I 1 had opportunity port unity to go to now new york philadelphia and baltimore on approaching the birst named city on tile the ferry from the jersey side I 1 noticed silhouetted bouette ed d against the sky to strange buildings which were built since my last visit there about ten tell years ago the woolworth building the tallest office building in the world towers seven hundred and ninety three feet into tho the sky it is of gothic architecture anti and is appropriately termed tho the cathedral of 0 business Busi nebs 11 it was my good fortune forli ino to ascend to this lofty and obtain a birds eyo view of the city anti and its surrounding harbors what most impressed me at philadelphia were those old historic carpenters liall hall in which were enacted tho the first great scenes in the drama of american independence nestling modestly in the very heart of tile the city they show marked in contrast to the towering office structures of present day business independence hall contains c mil tallis the historic liberty dell bell among many other relics of revolutionary days and this little called the cradle of american liberty occupies a large place in the heair of every true american at carpenters hall the first continental congress held its sessions and when one thinks of the vast difference between this small hall and the great capitol building in which the present sessions of congress are held lie he realizes the marvelous growth of this country I 1 also so visited fairmount Pair mount park tho the largest municipally pall park in the country in ill v aich which is located the museum Mus euni of pennsylvania I 1 was greatly interested te in the exten she collect collection ii ot united states coins and medals bearing the features of the presidents I 1 dents and other celebrities from tile the federal mint in that city baltimore the monumental catly I 1 found to be a busy manufacturing center N uth ith a population of approximately three quartets oi of a million john hopkins university and hospital lanious the world over is located here one trip which I 1 made however will always remain in my in memory it was a trip of about two hundred miles through the beautiful shenandoah valley and blue ridge mountains renowned in song and story to luray caverns at luray va probably never heard of by the majority of americans these caverns hold in my opinion ti a high rank among the wonders of tile the country in fact I 1 believe the three most wonderful sights which it has been my privilege to see are zion canyon of oc southern utah niagara falls anti and luray caa urns the ca caerny erns were discovered by hunters some thirty years ago and after being made accessible to the public arid and electrically lighted they are arc visited annually annU tilly by thousands of people they comprise three miles of underground passageways eways filled with the splendor of multi col ored stalactites and stalagmites mites and about two hours are required to go through them standing in this mighty grotto far down in the bowels 0 of tho the earth awed into silence by the portrayal poi of nature at her best I 1 felt as though I 1 stood in a sacred temple one hundred and twenty years are required to make one cubic inch of this formation and it ft is almost a impossible to conceive of the time it lias has taken for the slow steady of water to form the pillars somo some of which measure thirty feet in ill height with a diameter of ten tell feet tho the cave is self ventilating and remains at a constant temperature of 0 fifty four degrees last spring I 1 spent several weeks in virginia visiting and sketching the grounds on oil which were enacted the bloodiest battles ot of the war of the rebellion the principal al ones which I 1 saw yore were fredericks burg 1 salem church Spottsyl Spott sylvania vanla courthouse bloody angle chancellorsville and the battle of the wilderness I 1 was conducted over some of 0 these battlefields by an old confederate veteran and his dramatic recital of that hat conflict and his participation therein gave me a new conception ot ol the terrible four years 5 ears struggle but after all the splendors of ther the capitol and the east cannot drive away aay that craving which oft often seles seizes my heart lor a glimpse of home once more I 1 can call see in my dreams those giant rocky cliffs of the westland rising up to hide their snow capped peaks in the clouds and mist I 1 picture the barren sag elands the scorching breathless deserts stretching away milo mile after mile to end whom where tho the purple hazy mountains lift their towering heights to meet the sky I 1 can hear the roar of the angry rivers as far down in the depths of canyons they speed on their relentless eternal course to freedom and the sea there in truth is the land ot magnificent distances all the monuments anti and vast structures turea which h ch tile the hand of man can build pale into insignificance before those glorious examples of the handiwork of the first great architect and creator I 1 look forward to the timo when I 1 shall retain again to the land of deseret the home of tile tho pioneers I 1 wish nish you and your newspaper continued success and heartily commend your efforts in boosting for tho the welfare of the good people of richfield and the sevier valley respects respectfully ully CORNELIUS SALISBURY |
