GIRL SHOULD KNOW UTAH FEED COWS GRAIN WHEN ON PASTURE HEBER CITY Utahs lamb crop In 1929 is estimated at 1,458,000 head, in spite of the unfavorable winter and spring. In 1928 the crop amounted to 1.732.000 head and in 1927 1,405,000. HEBER CITY Last years production of apples in Utah amounted to 880.000 bushels, with a valuation of Salt Lake valley Is the $704,000. heaviest producer. BRIGHAM CITY' Horse races, bucking broncs, mules and steers, roping, clowns, and musical entertainers will round out a program each afternoon of -- the Peach day .celebration here September 13 and 14, according to an announcement of the executive committee following a meeting at the chamber of commerce. PROVO More than 71,000 chicks have been sold by the Utah Poultry Producers association in the Provo district alone during the past season, according to Manager John T. Harden of the local plant. . In the entire district of the local plant, comprising the territory from Vineyard to Payson, more than 215,000 chicks have been Keeps Up Milk Flow for Fall Production. v y, record-- keeping Unless cows are given a constant supply of pure, fresh water, the milk supply will be seriously impaired. Cows milk is about 87 per cent water ; unless she gets plenty of water, milk formation will not be carried on. A eow will drink anywhere from 10 to gallons of water per day and more during warm weather. In summer time the dairy water supply should be protected so that it does not become stagnant oi sour. Disease germs taken in through that water may be carried into the milk. In winter time see that the water is slightly warmed before it is given to the cows. Ice cold water is not productive to the heavy drinking which helps milk production. Individual drinking cups for cows seems to be the ideal solution of the dairy water supply problem. Dairymen have found that the installation of individual drinking cups pays for itself in a comparatively short time in increased milk flow. W hen a cow has water at hand all the time, she will constantly drink It. 15 - Grain Supplement Must Be Furnished in Summer on pasture? Since spring and summer grass is relatively low in nutrients, a cow producing 25 to 30 pounds of milk per day must eat about 150 to 300 pounds of grass in order to get enough feed for her daily requirements. Since this is practically impossible, a grain supplement must be given. For cows producing 20 to 35 pounds of milk per day, a mixture of the ordinary farm grains such as oats, corn, wheat bran, and barley fed at the rate of one pound of grain to four to six pounds of milk produced per day will be sufficient. For cows producing more than 35 pounds of milk per day, the ration should contain a high protein concentrate mixture. saw a book advertised telling what a girl should know before marriage. Most Important Factor in Lowering Milk Cost The Ohio station several years ago showed that corn silage saved the dairy farmer 10 cents a pound on the cost of producing a pound of butter, and 40 cents on the cost of producing a hundred pounds of milk. Several other experiment stations have shown figures that range from 6 to 15 cents saving on the cost of butter and from 25 to 75 cents on the cost of a hundred pounds of milk. Many of the early cow testing associations also demonstrated that the silo was one of the most important factors in lowering the cost of milk. , Farm crops and livestock in the southern part of the state are in excellent condition, J. Cecil Alter, chief of the local weather bureau, reported recently after an extended trip to that section. The recent rains greatly benefited the fall and winter ranges and the indications are that there will be plenty of feed, he said. During his trip Mr. Alter visited seventeen weather bureau stations. RICHFIELD A banner year for sugar beet growers seems certain in this section, according to. S. R. Boswell, county agricultural agent. The long spells of cloudy weather, with frequent showers, has been ideal for the growth of beets. The hay crops have been above normal and the grain has matured with less loss than was expected as a result of the heavy storm that occurred July 27. CEDAR CITY The total number of visitors into southern Utah parks up 3 to August 24, was 28,076 against during the corresponding period of last year, E. T. Scoyen, superintendent of Zion park and Bryce canyon, said recently. He is attending the governors conference. Approximately ten superintendents of national parks will visit here en rute to or from Yellowstone park to attend a superintendents conference in the park September 18 to 24. ROOSEVELT Plans are well under way for holding in Roosevelt this fall the first dairy show, ever held in. the Uintah basin, according to Walter E. Atwood, chairman of the agricultural and livestock committee of the Roosevelt Commercial club. Mr. Atwood says that owners of dairy cattle In all parts of the basin are taking a keen interest In the show and that he is now assured that more than 100 head of the finest dairy cows in the basin will be exhibited. AMERICAN FORK The second carload of mill concentrates from the mill of the Pacific Gold Mining and Milling company in American Fork canyon left here last week for the smelter. Reports from the property are that grade of ore that was milled in the drift is still heading into the same last car of 55 tons, about $60 to the ton. An streak of high grade ore continues in the face of the drift and the workings give promise of a high grade bunch, which may open up in the next few days. SALT LAKE Crops in Utah have suffered less from the dry weather than lii some of the other mountain states, and the indicated yield of sugar beets is greater than in 1928, according to the Standard Statistics company of New York. General conditions in this group of-- states are more satisfactory than last year, the company reports. Records of the company show that Salt Lake transacted the largest volume of business, measured by debits against individual checking accounts, reported for any July in the last 11 yearsv VERNAL Since the inception late last spring of the drive on mountain lions in the Diamond mountain region, northeast of Vernal, five of the killers have been slain. As the lion infested territory extends into Colorado, as well as the big game and fishing region, efforts are being made by the sportsmen of Uintah county to secure the cooperation of the Colorado state fish and game department to have the state line posted. In past years the fact that hunters, trappers and fishermen of the two states at times found that they had unknowingly, operated beyond the borders of their own state has led to some unpleasantness. 24,-63- , Should grain be fed to dairy cows ' sold. OGDEN Cows Require Liberal Amount of Water Always , QUITE IMPORTANT Much Money Lost Each Year by Unskilled Manner.'1 . . The better dairyman knows that it pays to feed his cows in the summer as well as In winter, says G. W. Tail-bJr of the New York State College of Agriculture, For the past ten years dairymen in all parts of New York state have been feeding their cows better in the summer. v As an example of results from and better feeding, Mr, Tailby spoke of a dairyman in Oswego county who, five years ago had 16 cows which produced 5,335 pounds of milk with 174 pounds of butterfat; the next year r 17 cows produced 6,843 pounds of milk with 233.5 pounds butterfat; the third year 13 cows produced 5,777 pounds of milk with 197.4 pounds of butterfat, and the fourth year 14 cows produced 9,579 pounds of milk with 318 pounds of butterfat During the first summer the cows were fed no grain during June or July, and only four pounds a cow a day during August During the fourth summer, the cows received an average of four pounds a day, and were fed somewhat according to production, although they were still underfed. The 9,579 pounds average for the fourth year was at least partly due to better summer feeding. One dairy herd improvement association member said recently, I find that it pays to keep the cows in the barn until June 1, Then the grass has a good start and has some substance in it. My cows have good pasture for June, but I continue to give them a little grain, about four pounds a day. Soon after July 1, I begin to cut green alfalfa for .them and also increase the grain. This holds up the milk flow and keeps the cows in condition for next fall." . CULLING METHODS . h . . , t - AH the good methods In building a profitable poultry flock may be followed but if culling is not practiced, the results are disappointing. Culling is one of the most discussed phases of poultry work," says C. F. Parrish, poultry extension specialist at the North Carolina State There Is a great deal of college. money lost each year on unskilled and culUng. Most poultry-meare elastic In their culling practices, leaving weaklings, short and round backed birds, deformed or undersized chicks with the hope that these may develop into profitable birds. This is bad. Such birds are always costly. Culling must start with the baby chicks and space may be saved and disease eliminated If the baby chicks are rigidly culled. This culling needs to be followed on through the growing stage and when the pullets are transferred to the laying house in the fall, the good poultryman will pull out the weaklings that may have been overlooked earlier. If egg production dreps suddenly, It may be a case of poor feed or disease but when birds have gone eight months and have not laid, it means that they are from stock and should be disposed VTOST people depend on Bayer Aspirin to make short work of headaches, but did you know it's just as effective in the worse pains from neuralgia or neuritis? Then when egg prices drop In the spring, another rigid culling should take place with only the best hens In the flock kept in the laying house. The virtue of this plan is that the hens are marketed as they become culls and no birds are kept that are not paying their way in egg production. In such cases, also, the hens are not all dumped on the market When prices may be low. To cull properly, Mr. Parrish suggests giving attention to the comb, health, eyes, molt, pelvic bones, flexibility of the abdomen, shank and beak, vent color and weight. - For Barbed Wire Cuts Try HANFORDS Balsam of Myrrh first battle if not mitad.
