listened to their troubles the state has money deposited here and the cashier told me that it was a godsend to that little community tor for their cief industry had been hit very I 1 bard cattle and sheep are about all they have to depend upon and it va was as about killed hilled I 1 assured them that as soon as possible I 1 would send them a little rn more ore here we were given a reception and left tor for fish lake arriving there late 1 in the afternoon f ter noon but had time to look it over and drive down the new road or high line back to eld AT K monday morning we were on our way early to marysvale Marys vale stopping at the little places long enough tor for the people to shake hands with the governor at marysvale Marys vale we round found conditions quite bad the potash mines which are the chief industry were nil all shut down throwing about men out ont of work this together with the stock and sheep gone you can imagine the results the little bank bad to close its doors tor for repairs and I 1 assured them that when it was ready to open the state elate would deposit some money with them wo we left marysvale Marys vale at 1 p in and going south we passed the silver valley where there la Is water backed up tor for over seven miles making a small lake this Is 13 the continued on pago page six W D sutton makes trip tri P through southern utah reservoir that the state has just sold to the people of that the next town Is junction the county seat of pints county the governor held a meeting with 4 the boners arid and after adjourn mont two of 0 the ac coma pilled us thru the county and were made at circleville Clr Cir cleville and widstoe A watermelon bust was held at Cir circleville cleville and on golub thru widstoe county we reached an aitt tude lude of about abou t feet the peo pie seem to grow every everything thin they lire and seem to be happy NF NEARING THE rl KW we are now flow coming to the rin of if brice canyon and about p ni we arrive at the canyon the thing was to register and get located in our two by tour four tents alere here wo we had bad our first campfire campure meal two large trout had been given the governor at fish lake and we all had a chance to see who could eat the most it took until before that could be determined ind and it was ananious ly decided that the governor took the prize in the morning mornine at sunrise we were all on the rim to see the canyon in all its splendor the governor sat for fully twenty minutes before he spoke then tor for two hours he tried to picture it in his mind but finally he said 1 I cannot find words to describe it ate ills his breakfast and went again to look it over at lunch after going down in the canyon he tried to tell it but again he said 1 I cant tell it people will just have to dome come and see for themselves AT PANGUITCH we were due at panguitch at and at that time the governor jumped from his car in amazement to find a brass brasa band of 0 eighteen or twenty youngsters none over fifteen years ot of age playing national a irs airs with all the vim and enthusiasm ot f professionals fessio nals the governor was as ag proud as the kiddoo kid dos were the governor never tails falls to shake the hands bands ot of his admirers and speak to them for a few minutes at we were given some banquet where thirty or founty people had prepared a real meal at the governor spoke tor for one and a halt half hours telling the condition 0 of our state and I 1 the need ot of curtailment in city state and nation this is the home ot of state senator tebbs who nho by the tha way Is cashier of 0 the bank and one ot of the leading men in the county he told us that the little deposit the state ha has s in its ita bank was a godsend to them and tor for goodness sake to send down some more it if possible and I 1 have promised to do so just as soon eoon as convenient from here we took a side trip to lake over some badly washed out roads mud and finally arrived at the lake to inspect a state lisa fish hatchery this ts Is one ot of the many hatcheries that have been abandoned and what money was war spent has been rost the people told us that some 2000 pounds of trout were caught dally from this lake and shipped all over the country until the law was passed prohibiting it TILL BORDER going back to panguitch and after leaving there we passed the hatch town reservoir where the state lost levei several al hundred thousand dollars la in claims and money spent which went w ent out with the flood in low less time than it takes to tell it along here in wet weather it Us its almost impossible to travel the roads are so bad atter alter leaving hatchtown Hatch town and pawing passing thru altonah alzonah you come to the johnson ranch here we encountered some sandy roads but this does not interfere with travel prom from johnsons ranch to kanab Is about five miles and the roads are good at this place the raising of stock block and sheep is the chaeff industry some vegetables and fruits are raised but I 1 most all of the grain of any kind Is imported kanab Is the home of 0 representative who is ia very much in evidence in fa his home town jojn here the governor held a I 1 meeting with the county commission ers rand and school board and many things vere talked over pertaining td tt the much talked of road to long valley the bank is now in the i hands of the ie receiver colver lec eiver but I 1 beliew it will soon be taken over by some new people and I 1 ass assured red tile them that u they could haie hae soine ot of the states money to assist the recovery of its finances kanab Is the last town in utah going directly south you reach fredonia Fre donla in arizona about 2001 people are living here I 1 understand I 1 that they haul their drank ing w water ater from kauai kanab which aih must be unsatisfactory to say the least VIEWING NATURES WONDERS we are now about sixty five miles from bright angel point of the grand canyon of 0 the colorado we arrived hero here about sundown J just u st in ume time to see the canyon at its 1 best e and it was indeed simply wonderful one must visit this place tor for it la is impossible to describe it and do justice to it As we came thru the kaibab forest we saw herds of deer roaming thru the trees tike like cattle in a pasture we drove thru timber tor for about fifty miles nearly every kind of a pine grows aroas in this section they grow to be very large and possibly feet high without a limb until near the top governor mabey had planned to make a tour of the forest and with seven in our party each on horseback with two pack horses we started and tor for three days daya we rodo rode thru the forest stopping at each point on the canyon 1 hoping to catch a mountain uon lion but all we got was the hunt some seven ty five miles were covered in the three days daya and we never got out of the forest we saw the canyon fro in 1 many points but bright angel pot point it la Is as good as any view with one olle exception that ot of sublime P point int here you get a glimpse ot of the river two or three miles away our guide was wag a real one not for cor one minute did he lose himself although people say it you got get off 0 of your coursed course one might roam around forever and aill never fin find the way out it is too bad utah does not town lawn this still ptiip ol of ground I 1 I 1 THE DESERET I 1 leaving here about p in we drove back to kanab the only place e where accommodations can be ba lac bad and the next ino morning we started across the desert to hurricane in i the dixie r country over some of the worst norst roads on our whole trip it took oak us about six hours to make tile the I 1 eity miles stop but bul ones once at P pipe pe spring a very desolate ind anil his ahls cocle 1 place where during the at mormon or trouble with polygamy poly gally alvea yes wele sent to rear their balles balies andl and gi get t out of the way tor for the tinie time iri be ing the whole place 3 a i fort ort and was arranged so BO every bevc illg I 1 be protected from the indians dla is as well as white bite men at A t hurricane the governor was given ghen a reception and met the com neTs going over the conditions condition ot of the county here the people have hava hard problems to overcome they can ralso raise anything but grapes alg und and nuts nuta seem to be their best crops while they raise plenty of hay bay eattle eattie and sheep it Is hard bard to market anything as there is no railroad and their crops must be hauled to market by them which la is very difficult over such buch poor roads alter after we had lunch we were taken to the tha warm springs about ono one mile north of hurricane and everyone had bad a good swim being ono one ot of the most moart enjoyable events ot of our trip and I 1 can say it Is the best water I 1 have ever been een in it if this was in some borne places it would be worth a gold mine RECALLING EARLY DAYS about p m we left for or zion canyon on our way up we met a delegation of 0 utah city mayors from salt lake ogden logan and many other cities taking just such a trip the opposite direction as we only going lon they having come from cedar city where they were la in session I 1 tor for three days zion canyon is like all or of the wonders one must go and see eee it as it Is impossible to describe it we stayed at the wiley camp that night part of our crowd took horses and made the trip up the canyon as tar fax as our time would allow as we were due in st georget georgei and the Gover govermor dor usually keeps his appointments on oil time it if possible leaving the canyon we passed thru the towns ot of rockville La laversin Verkin toquerville and anderson And ereon ranch passing within two miles of silver reef where here I 1 spent eight months forty two years ago when this camp was a very busy place we went thru leeds on to washington county arriving at st george about p m where the governor was waa given a reception people turned out with a band to welcome elcome A him and he made a speech from the courthouse steps which was one of the best talks I 1 think he ever made st george has its troubles both here and at hurricane the banks are badly in need of funds and while the state has some borne money deposited there I 1 am going to see that they get some additional dit ional funds THE GOVERNORS HOME from st george we vie retraced our steps to anderson andersen ranch then over the black ridge to kanarraville Kanar raville where we were met by tile the commissioners 0 of iron county here tho the state mental hospital board went to see a family of four biown people who are mentally and physically until unfit to take care of 0 themselves T they hey will have to be sent to our jinx hospital as aa soon as it Is we were then escorted to cedar city this Is where governor mabey taught school in the branch agricultural college for two years atter after we had bad eaten a large tealone leahona bleak the commissioners led the way I 1 up cedar canyon nere here the state and government have bae soleat romle on the cedar long valley road this road is to connect cedar uty city with the cedar brakes bra ke and long valley making A circuit around tho the rim 0 of the brakes and coming down clown parowan carowan canyon to that city three miles ot of this road was waa blasted out 0 of solid rock and cost per mile to coni it was a good thing lor for this part it if the te country that it was built when building was good as I 1 doubt under dr normal conditions it if people W would C ud d consent to spend L t u 1 amount of money on roads not a it i is true thre there is sonie some AU ao u rul seen ery and it will be the ill i ia ot of sight bight seeking beeking parties coming to lu tills lils city that bould have otner e passed th them em by had not the ruid been put in bhame so PL people ople could cond make inake C abo h u trip in autos from ans ti mountain on a clear day one can call see four states zion canon can on Is I 1 seen from the top of the rim from this point the virgin sevier panguitch and cedar rivers all flow in fit different directions thru a world of 0 umber where deer sheep aud and cattle mix together we arrived back in cedar city just in time for or the governor to address the good people oi of I 1 that city in Ms his address he complimented the people on the progress of the city in the last fifteen years or since he lived among them CHEAP ROAD noad BUILDING I 1 j was a hard bard busy day but wo we agreed to get up early and make parowan carowan tor for breakfast after daiv sug ing eighteen miles by a in and eating a real breakfast of country cream and mush eggs and lot hot cream bu we were ready tor for anything autos had been provided to take us all canyon to the rim of the cedar brakes this Is the home 0 the lion wilford day who was so active in our last legislature and to him we owe our nice trip it took careful driving and a good machine to make the climb climbs part ot of the grade is 12 per cent and it being a new road makes it more difficult to climb I 1 might say eay that this miles of road was built tor for loss leas money than one mile in the cedar canyon canon it having baving bee been u done by |
