respond-ed with 110 following ADDRESS TO MRS METCALF S I Is alwayfc 1 tad day at the old home when the ilijgt breaking up occur either when tthe boys and girls first enter college I col-lege or when they F ooil to make new homes o their own The thought of separation Is painful and to tho parents comes a feeling of anxiety now that the sweet Influences of the homcllfo are to bo withdrawn and tlif thought occurs thought will tho young lives unfold first the sorrow sor-row In the new atmosphere I Is now that hope and faith come In mc to strengthen and give courage for thc separation The church is but an aggre agSr t aLono homes and something ot this J feeling comes to us as we have gathered to say goodbye to one of oir number It seems fitting that while we by our presence hero this evening express our regard for Mrs Mctealf we should also express our appreciation of the holp and encouragement that she and her good husband hayo given us In the work of re building the waste places In Zion where they have always stood reach to push forward any enterprise for the best Interests Inter-ests oC the church uSd as we feel at parting with Mr and Mrs Mctcalf and great n S we feel our loss to be you will pardon me I am cure if I say one word lr relation to the loss sustained by tho unfortunate children of tho Deaf and Dumb school which loss o my estimation completely overshadows our own I have known more of Mrs Metcalfs work In the school than In the church and I feel 1 that 4 would not be true to myself or to my love l of true womanhood wo-manhood If T did not pay this small tribute trib-ute to this noble woman who has seen ked time and strength In her efforts to lift theo children to higher Ideals and to more earnest striving for true man hood and true womanhood that while a whie superior educator enthusiastic and Inspir lug to her pupils she never neglected tho first and most Important work of charac tcrhiiUrlfng and It seems to me that not only to this Institution but to this branch of education the loss Is Irreparable when such men and such women feol called ol caled upon to lay down theft work But happily there is a brighter side to this parting7that we would most gladly consider and that Is our firm belief In the providence of God in such chances ant that whatever Ip 1 for the best chanEe3 I wi and while we may feej that we are walk I Ing In the dark Just now can wo not feel the grasp of tho hand that has never lalied us however dark the night And may we not hope that this going out may be tho carrying of the germs of tho new life to another field and
