subject of an able and interesting address ad-dress by Mrs Martha BurgessJen flings delivered at the monthly meeting meet-ing of the city teachers this morning Besides the teachers there was a large representatpn of club women present and the lecture was directed as much toward thC cub women as to the teachers Mrs Jennings took thp ground that there is a field of useful nessta education quite distinct trom that of the teacher and that this field may be filed by the club women There should be a complete understanding between be-tween club women pursuing educational educa-tional subjects and the teachers Club women should not and a a rule do not visit schools for the purpose of investigating the work of any particular par-ticular teacher and reporting on such work either to the advantage or disadvantage dis-advantage of the teacher The general aim of such visitors is to ascertain general facts about the system and to suggest general improvements to the powers that govern Men being the breadwinners have not time for such work and teacher occupied with their profession lack time for invest atng methods and for caring out reforms even those their jUdgment tells the should be made All this work can and should be done by the earnest energetic club member with time and taste for intellectual culture Im provemets looking toward the beautifying fying of school buildings and g un sand s-and fostering patriotism among the pupils may be carried on by the club women The speaker cited the work of cub women in Massachusetts in this line She also dwelt on the importance of libraries and outlined the great work for education which may be done by club women in fostering such institutions institu-tions and in makjng them effective On the mater of the kindergarten work irs Jennings took a decided stand in favor of its incorporation in the school system even at the expense of the hIgher branches She argued that the kindergarten was the foundation founda-tion of the true educational system and should not be neglected Furthermore it would tend to diffus educaton more generally through the masses since the numbers of pupils of kIndergarten agE are so much great than of hIgh school age She would not be understood ac opposIng the high school but if one or the other had to be cued the curtail the high school The address was generally commended commend-ed and was discussed by Mrs
