Friday Jan. 19, 1945 $1.50 Per Year In Advance LETTER TELLS OF TORPEPOED SHIP The following is a letter received by Mrs. Ralph Hanney foam one of Eugenes friends, who was witli him when his ship, was torpedoed: Odenton, Md., Dec. 27. . Dear Mop: I dont know just how to start this letter. It just about breaks my heart to tell you what I have to. It happened on Thanksgiving. It was about 3:17 in the evening. We were just off the coast of France. Gene was on watch, and I was off watch, sleeping. The thing hit. and woke me up, then I got dressed, and Gene had oome ud from the engine room while I was dressing. He and I got out alright and we were laughing about the whole thing while we were lowering the .life boats, because there wasnt anybody hurt and we thot it was a lot of fun. Gene was on the opposite side of the ship from me. His life boat was No. 4, and mine was No. 1. We all got off the ship alright, but when the fellows on boat No. 4 got in their boats, the second torpedo hit, and it hit right, under Genes boat. There were nineteen fellows lost We went around in our boats and picked Gene and some of the other fellows up. When I saw Gene in the water I wanted to kill myself, too You cant know how I felt. I waut you to know Gene was the bes friend I ever had. We took him to France and then he went to the hospital. . He was dead before we got him there. ' I want you to know that Gene didnt have any pain. He was dead before we even picked him up, I think. The next day I went down to the hospital to see " about him, ahd they toldme that T couldnt see him because he was already down to the cemetery. vHe was buried in Cherbourg France. Im going to send you Genes hat and his belongings which he left here. I know you will be glad to get them. That picture you sent Mom, was a perfect image of him. and I wont let heaven or earth separate me from it. I will carry it wherever I gd. I cant tell you how . , . I miss hip. After the war Im going to try to bring mom out to see you. I hope you will keep on writing to Mom and I. Well, Mom, this isall I can say now, except that I am always think ing aibqut you folks. I know it is hard on you and the whole family. If you want me to do anything, do not hesitate to let me know, and I will try my best to see all of you again after the war. All my love, BUDDY.
