Stoddard says, The curriculum of training was initiated to help meet the demands of the dairy industry for herdsmen with experience and education. The increasing enrollment in the four-yea- r dairy science program at USU has been able to fill only a few of the many available positions. This lack of capable herdsmen has hampered the development of new herds. Dr. Stoddard explained that most of the education in the dairy herdsman program is supervised experience at the Utah State University Dairy Farm. Students do what dairy herdsmen do. They work with the veterinarian when he examines and treats the animals, they care for calving cows, they help select matings and breed cows, they milk cows, care for machines, and become involved in all other tasks, including some ersormel supervision. Classroom instruction is provided in such subjects as artificial insemination, farm equipment care and maintenance, and written communications.
