which three brigades of General Wilsons first army corps participated was one of the mpst thrilling military spectacles that has been witnessed since tho civil war After seven hours of almost continuous continu-ous maneuvering In which was exemplified exem-plified almost every phase of military tactics General A S Burt commanding command-ing the First brigade was outclassed by the Second and Third brigades which were pitted against him At 4 oclock this morning the call to arms was made The First brjgade General Burt commanding composed of the First Ohio Fifth Illinois and Third Wisconsin was posted at Mc Farlands Gap under orders to hold the gap If possible and If Impossible to retreat In gocd order Against the First brigade were the Second and Third The Second was commanded by General Compton composed of the Fourth Ohio Third Illinois and iFourth Pennsylvania and the Third commanded com-manded by General Hullngs and composed com-posed of the Sixteenth Pennsylvania One Hundred and Fiftyseventh Indiana I Indi-ana and Second Wisconsin The maneuvering was determined I from the start and during the progress i n lh I of the maneuvers portions the commands com-mands were scattered to various parts of the Held Here a company would I charge t put foretreat a detached I squad of the opposing commend elsewhere else-where skirmisher lines were thrown out I and at times driven back As timbered sections were reached skilled movements move-ments were made to gain shelter of the trees Repeated charges were made I against General Burts front only to be gallantly repulsed The doughty I commander had lost none of the spirit that characterized him upon the same field when it ran red with the carnage of actual battle a third of a century agoAt last Generals Compton and Hul Ings decided upon a combined front and tank attack The Second brigade attacked the front while the Third was I thrown to General Burts right flank the movement Riphtgallantly was te new met by the First but at last the Third i succeeded in outflanking the First I and gained the rear cutting oft General Burts retreat I At 1101 oclock the battle was declared to have been won by General Compton and Hullngs A READ CASUALTY A serious casualty occurred in the progress of the battle Lieutenant Batty of the Sixteenth Pennsylvania in command of a squad was surrounded by company C of the First Ohio regi ment and was ordered to surrender Instead of surrendering Lieutenant i Batty ordered a bayonet charge While at close range a member of the Ohio command shot directly at Lieutenant Batty the charge striking him in the face and neck Inflicting alnful and serious Injuries Both eyes were badly Injured and the vision may be destroyed de-stroyed Bad blood was engendered by the incident and the men rushed together to-gether I was only by the coolness and presence of mind of the officers that bloodshed was averted NEARLY FORTY THOUSAND By actual count the number of men now in Chickamauga park is 3SSS4 There are 33 regiments of infantry two of cavalry and three batteries of artillery i ar-tillery Ohio has furnished the greater number of men She has six regiments j I with 532S men on the
