Show FOURTH DISTRICT COURT Judge King presided in the Fourth district court yesterday when the following fol-lowing matters came up for adjudication adjudica-tion Jens C Peterson et aI vs Niels Nielson et al evidence of witnesses heard and further hearing continued until June 7 Western Loan Savings company vs T l1 Ferrin et aI judgment entered en-tered for 5950S3 on default of plaintiff plain-tiff tiTe case of A M Blanchard charged with attempt to commit rape was continued for the term The case of the people vs William Parker was resumed yesterday morning morn-ing This is a case in which the testimony mony is of the most revolting char I acter The defendant was charged by I 1 his little daughter with the crime of I rape The girl is only 1 years of age I i I yet she is apparently a very bright child There was cxisiderable evidence i i evi-dence which tended to show that she I was given to telling falsehoods and that she was really quite a bad girl for one of her age The facts brought out tended to show conduct so unnatural I un-natural on the part of the defendant i that one could scarcely believe a man could become So depraved The defense made a determined effort to break the force of f ne testimony testi-mony for the prosecution and owing to the uncertainly on the part of the little girl as to times and places and i the fact that she was known to bs a i story teller a fact which she ad1 i l mitted there was a grave question of I doubt raised In the case as to the guilt of the defendant The prosecution was represented by Judge Maginnis and Colonel Peyton and the defendant by Evans Rogers This case occupied the attention of the court until the close of the day I when a recess was taken until S oclock in the evening LOCAL BRIEFS The weather yesterday interfered with the races at the driving park so that the attendance was very light A few more days of damp cool weather will cut down the yield of strawberries in this county at least 50 per cent Eliason will appear at the Grand this evening He comes with an entire new bill of attractions and promises his audience several bran new tricks never before promulgated During the temporary absence of Judge King Attorney Will H Smith was called to the bench Who knows but that in the course of events he may be called to occupy this same bench permanently It is the general opinion that the Democratic political machinery should be put in order for the campaign The Republicans are getting things in shape and the Democrats should be ready in case of an emergency so that they can begin active Operations at once Yesterday news was received in this city to the effect that Mark A Elmer an old resident of Siaterville was dead The deceased was born December Decem-ber 16 184S and was 46 years 4 months and 15 days old at the time of his death The funeral will take place today to-day from the Second ward meeting house in this city at 2 oclock p m It Is the general opinion that the Tribune artist selected a very poor Trilby for his model of the female figure which appeared on the first page of that paper yesterday Such a picture pic-ture though only an ideal one is a slander on the human form divine One thing is certain and that is the model for that drawing was never selected se-lected by Judge Goodwin or Colonel Lannan If the original of that picture is a widow her deceased husband is a lucky man no matter where he maybe may-be LA COTERIE An extra meetinoizflui7ZLcafl A atiii ed < by the new president Mrs Bannis ter was held at the pleasant home or Mrs A J Warner Wednesday afternoon after-noon Mrs Elliot was elected secretary and treasurer in place of Mrs A P Blge low who had resigned and three mew members Mesdames P H Emerson and L B Adams and Miss Jessie Bigelow were admitted to membership member-ship After conlusion of other business cards were resorted to making the closing afternoon a very jolly one Refreshments were then served and the club adjourned for the season |
