Show STILL GOING ON Dr Fausts Organizing Work in Utah County A STRONG ONE IN PROYO The Stock 3Ten arc Making Good Progress Toward Protection from Thieves Pursuant to the announcement made in the Enquirer of Friday last a preliminary prelim-inary meeting of the stockmen of Utah county was held in the basement of the Provo Meeting House Monday evening There were present from Salt Lake City H J Faust vicepresident of the Utah Association General R T Burton and John Q Cannon Esq The meeting was called to order and on motion of Mr J C Graham Mr J E Booth was elected chairman On motion of Mr I Bullock Mr J C Graham was elected secretary The chairman briefly stated the object ob-ject of the meeting At the conclusion of his remarks Dr Faust was called for and that gentleman gen-tleman responded He said he had not come here to assist in the organization of the proposed association by special instruction in-struction or authority from any convention conven-tion but to advise and urge cooperation coopera-tion among the cattle and horse men of the county for the purpose of protection and development of the stock interests He referred in an interesting manner to the work done in the St Louis Convention Conven-tion by the Utah delegation The leaving leav-ing out of Utah and Idaho from the proposed movement to monopolize the public lands in the interest of extensive stock men was an important undertaking undertak-ing and this had been done by dint of hard work by the Utah and Idaho delegates del-egates Such a scheme was readily seen to be opposed to the best interests of our Territory small stock growers would be placed at the mercy of the larger and i wealthier classes of cattle and horse growers This action has since the return re-turn home of the delegation been denounced de-nounced by the class referred to though in point of numbers they do not exceed more than half a dozen The people of Utah need protection not only against cattle theives but also against the i bloated monopolist who is able to take care of himself The speaker showed the advantages of raising improved stock We are shipping ship-ping out annually 30000 cattle for which we get only 900000 instead of two millions mil-lions of dollars More attention should be paid to breeding of stock and all should go to work to raise none but the best and most saleable however small the business of growing may be An arrangement be matte for the keep ing of a record of pedigree Cooperation in purchases of fall blooded stock from the east where people peo-ple individually cannot of themselves accomplish such purchases was advisable yisable He related several instances in his own experience which showed the utility and profitableness of the cooperative co-operative method One great object in thus organizing as a county association i was protection against the everlasting j thief This is a step which cdnrerncc all citizens Mormons Jews and Gentiles Gen-tiles all should combine in a project of this kind Another object was to combine bine and cooperate in the establishment establish-ment of ranches the raiding of improved stock and ceasing the culture of scrubs The third object was that when the next najtional convention shall meet Utah will be represented by good men and recognized as a potter and when a public steal shall be attempted at-tempted we can sit down on it General Burton addressed the meeting meet-ing and spoke in a similar strain He tendered some excellent advice to farmers farm-ers as well as stockmen We are recreant re-creant he said to our interests when we continue to labor like slaves for the production of inferiqr articles We should use the intellect God has endowed en-dowed us with as well as the vast resources re-sources at our command by means of oil and climate in seeking to produce nothing but the best of everything Our opportunities are greater than they were and we should put them to good account circumstances necessitate necessi-tate the pursuit of different methods in our farm and stock producing industries indus-tries Mr John Q Cannon was called for and approved of the suggestions made by the former speakers The proposed organization would be particularly beneficial to the smaller growers Dr Faust moved that the meeting now proceed to the organization of a stock association for Utah County The motion was
