Show PROGRESSIVE OPINION Entered u Second dates Matter at the Port Office t Salt Lake City. Utah, under the Act or March 3. 1879 . - LTT r This Mine Was Not Just Found X '''- - t .. 0 ! n Completion of a spur railroad track to its workings, recalls what one of Utah's newest mines went through in order to take its place as one of the steady metal pro-ducers of the state. This is the New Park mine, where the Union Pacific recently completed a four-mil- e spur from Keetley to the mine ore bins. Prospecting on the ground which now comprises New Park was begun as early 83 1900. Early operations were small, but en-couraging showings were encoun-tered in this work. Near the sur-face the Park Galena and Glenallen companies found ore and both companies produced small amounts from comparatively shallow work-ings. Then the Mayflower com-pany took a hand and started a deep development tunnel In an ef-fort to determine It the ore con tinued downward. All these companies were unable to see the project through and as a result in the late 1920's the ground of these companies was consolidated into what is now the New Park Mining company. The New Park had its ups and downs, but the present management finally succeeded In pushing the May-flower tunnel to its objective. A new producer has been found, a new mineral area opened up and the resources of the state ex-panded. The history of New Park goes to prove that mines are not just found they are made. They are made through years of search and sacrifice and the expenditure of large sums of money. Prospecting in Utah needs to be encouraged as the number of new mines has been too few In recent years. FoodFRTihMgM M e had a visitor the other day. It was not the president nor the governor nor any of the socially elite. It was the visit of a widow, well along in years, who for a few minutes poured forth the feelings of her innermost soul, and they were such as touched us deeply. She is like thousands of others, hunger-- , 'ng and thirsting for iieighborliness, for kindness and sympa-thy and love. Deep in her heart was an abidiDg laith which was all that kept goiDg. The world of business and so-ciety rushes swiftly by the widow and the orphan and there are few who give them aDy attention forgetting that true religion and undefiled is to visit and encourage and help them in their affliction. Neighbor J. A. Hess has thought out a name for the pres-ent war and forwarded it to the president. He calls it The War Against Wickedness. This is a very good and appropriate name and covers a multitude of meanings. Utah people should help him get the name adopted as it will help to the state. Orators and writers can find plenty of material for eloquent talks in the deep meanings of that name. Some years ago the Japenese officials sent a commission to the Christian nations of the West to find out and report whether Christianity was a religion which they could adopt as a state religion. The commission returned dissapointed and reported that they found such discrepancy between the practise and the profession of Christianity that they were unable to recommend it. Suppose they had accepted it would they have done differently than what they have? To accept the Christinity of the world as lived today and to accept the pure and undefiled religion of Jesus are two very different things The big bankers of today are quite different from the moneychangers confronted bv Jesus in the temple at Jerusalem In those days they were uncouth, d, coarse, and unskil-led in the art of concealing their greed and lust for gain, while today the most prominent ones in the piofession look much like saints, educated, smiling and affable, and highly skilled in all the arts of money-gettin- g and money-lendin- g, to whom, as the people are told, it is a special pri-vilege to pay interest and profit. When I quit this mortal shore, and mosey round the earth no mpre, don't weep, don't sigh, don't sob; I may have struck a better job. Don't go and buy a large bouquet, for which you'll find it hard to pay; don't mope around and feel all blue I may be better off than you Don't tell the folks I was a saint, or any old thing that I ain't; if you have jam like that to spread, please hand it out betoie I'm dead. If you have roses, bless your soul, just pin one in my but-tonhole while I'm alive and well today Don't wait until I ve gone away. From The Hanson Weigh Suppose that Jesus should confront the leading money-len- d ers of today. Would He do or say anything different from what He did and said to them of old time? Hardly. He would say: "Come out of the temples of my people and cease your oppression and exploitation of the poor. For all too long you have robbed the widow and the orphan and the toiler. You must not longer make my father's house (this land) a den of thieves. Away with you. The getting and hoarding of money is not the proper mission for men. Give of what you have to help save the poor, and come and follow me. My people are crying for' , for sympathy, for love and comradeship. They want the abundance and good tidings I promised them. Repent and come unto me before my judgements destroy you and your system. If you do not repent then what I have spoken in Mathew 24 shall be fulfilled upon your heads and you may later find yourselves lifting up your eyes in places of torment." , Chairman Percy S. Reserves to Meet Cricis s metal mining is prob-ably unique in what it can offer In the current emergency. The mining Industry haa been crippled somewhat during the past few years, but it can rebound almost Instantaneous to any stimulus. Mining booms take place over-nigh- t and there is sufficient smelting capacity existing in Utah to take care of almost any emergency. The lead-zin- c smelters only used about one-thir- d ol their capacities In 1941, due to the lack of ore production from smaller mines. In order to more clearly visualize the situation for the reader let us take the ease of the metal lead. The reserves of lead ores are measured by the metal content of the ore. Of course It must be remembered that the ores of this region virtually all contain certain amounts of gold, silver, copper. lead and zinc. But, using the production of lead, it is found that at 5 cent lead only a few of the high grade mines can operate. At 6 cent lead more mines can operate and the high grade mines can turn to larger production. At 7 cent lead addi-tional marginal producers can be brought into production and the mines already in production can increase the volume of their out-put. At eight cent lead vast new reserve of low grade ores can be opened up to production. This nation Is not lacking in ore reserve. Min?able ore reserves or what can be called ore reserves, however, are based upon what la paid for the metal. Mines of Utah and western United States can and will meet any emergency placed upon it by the demands of me-chanized warfare. NEWS FACTS george P LONDON, ENGUK9. k, OM A RECENT VISIT HERE.
