READERS OPINIONS (The opinions expressed in this column urethose of the writers, and are necessarily concurred in by the editor and management ofthis paper.) A Solar Plexus For Liquor Editor Progressive Opinion Will you please publish the following, spoken by Apostle Charles A.Callis? Thanks. Yours truly, P. D. Q. "We who boast of our liberty and freedom have exposed our boys and girls to the terrible ravage of drink. The demon drink is killing more people than war. The people of this state have power to call for state wide prohibition, but we sit still, supinely, under the grinding bondage which we have placed upon ourselves. If we willed it not a liquor house in this state could stand. The profits pouring into the state treasury is blood money, rivers of tears. I denounce it in the face of God, angels and men." Editorials Want To Censor Truth. An attempt has been made to censor the radio talks of Arthur Gaeth. He was told that he must not talk about Rus-sia nor about the poor economic conditions in many parts of Utah. But he stood his ground and refused to be censored. ' They are afraid of truth. They dare not let it be told that in leas than twenty years Russia made more progress in industry and economics in cooperation and literacy, than was ever before made in any like period in history, and that she was the only country on earth that was not affected by the de. pression. Any leader who tolerates economic conditions jn Utah and runs down 'Russia should hang his head and blush. The reason is that Utah's common people have been exploited to the limit, first by local interests and then turned over to ra-pacious Eastern interests who also have exploited them to the limit. Persohally we would be ashamed had we been gover-nor or legislator or financial or religious leader and left the pople in the condition they have been for ten years or more. News of CO-OPERATI-Permanent world peace can gone only when local econo-mic peace is'established by substituting the cooperati' e serv-- l ice motive for competitive profit-s?ekin- "A way is needed that shall be established on he basii of democracy, which is capable of production and distributing abundance, which prospers by plenty for all, which sets men and nations working together in the spirit of mutual aid, and which can embrace all people of all classes and of all nations," the program declares. Personal Items As long as we can keep men like Dr. J. W. Aird of Provo on the list there will be blue birds over our seat of wisdom. He is more than just a man and a doctor, he is pomewbat of an institution in Utah coun-ty and spends his days helping humanity. Thanks Dr. Aird. We have received a renewal from Duff in Construction Co. of Tooele. Thanks. We do not know the sender personally but we do know that the sub-scription was turned in by one of the best men in the world, and we man it, Geo. E. Man-warin- g. Trust we haven't neg-lected you George. Your good will is capital to us. Neighbors Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Lund have enjoyed a visit from their daughter Madora, Mrs. Grantford Hansen of Fair view, who has been ill for a while and eame in for a rest. A W. Parratt is a name that means a great deal in this of-fice. He has given us many a lift and faithfully stood by us when some others were passing by on the other side. Neigh-bor Parrott has been with us since the day Adam's first son, Cain, went hunting in the land of Nod where he caught a wife by the hair and dragged her into his own Eden. Mr. Parrat is an oracle for these times and knows more about causes aDd backgrounds of the present con flict than most men. j Harvey Marchant of Sandy sent a rainbow of hope into the office Tuesday by subscrib-ing He makes the third Mar-cha- nt on our list George and Steve and Harvey. He is a first class carpenter who is help ing to remodel for the govern-ment the buildiing we are in. Claire Olsen, our son-in-la-has been called into the Bervice of the government and has gone to Minneapolis to take the training as instructor in mech-anics, Our grandson, Duane Olsen is in training for a branch of the service and may be cal led away any time. "A debt of honor is an oblig-ation that cannot be enforced at law, but depends upon the honor and self respect of the debtor." Neighbor J. DeZwarte is a regular visitor and he always lias a fair guardian with him. He is as honest as a human ean be and live and never neg-lects the annual dues. He is a reader, a thinker and a speaker ... -- i Life's Great Law There is an irrevocable and inexorable taw governing life which cannot be evaded. "As we think and speak and act towards others, so will others think and speak and act toward us. Whatever sort of conduct we give out, that we are inevit-ably bound to get back. Anything and everything that we do for others will sooner or later be done to us. The good that we do to others we shall receive back in like measure; and the evil that we do to others in like manner we shall receive back too. For every unkind word that you speak to or about an-other person, an unkind word will be spoken to or about you. For every time that you cheat, you will be cheated. For every time that you deceive, you will be deceived. For every lie that you utter you will be lied to Every time that you neglect a duty, or evade a responsibility, or misuse authority over other people, you are doing something for which you will inevitably have to pay by suffering a like injury yourself " ... m Men Shall Cry Peace, But-- - "Peace hs been taken from the earth and will not return until Christ comes." Joseph Fielding Smith, L.D. S Apostle. Made Wise Choice "I would rather be a doodle bug burrowing in the dust . than a plotting, grafting politician. I would rather be a ped-dler of peanuts than a bond-grabb- and boodler with prjvil- - ; ege of despoiling the pantries of the poor. I would rather play a cornstalk fiddle while pickaninies danced than build of widows' sighs and orpans' tears a flimsy bauble of fame to be blown down the narrow beach of time into eternity's shoreless sea. I would rather be the beggar lord of a lodge in the wild-erness and live on hominy and hope, yet see the lovelight beam in unbought, truthful eyes than to be the marauding conqueror of the mighty world and know not who fawned up- - , on the master and who esteemed the man." Brann Something To Rejoice Over. Something that causes us to rejoice and be glad is senti- - ments like the following coming from very high places in Eng- - land and also some in the U. S. A. "There must be no return to the unplanned competitive world in which a privileged few were maintained at the expen- - seof the common good. There must be more socialism and more planning." .j. uc zjr7 v--f w w W W V t If V Y Kitchen VJ .... iffy u Short Course in y- - - y : ' MTRMOU ,.,';f.
