Everything was at a standstill; no money in circulation because the London interests kept it scarce and dear. There was demand and :a gnat need for a new market house where stalls could be rented to the merchants and farmers. The local government had no, money. It would be a good investment because the rents would pay the debt. No one had any money to loan and every one hoarded what little he had. The local government could not borrow money on its bonds. The president of the Parliament thought out a plan. The 'Market House would cost $20,000. They had no money but the brick maker had plenty of brick; thp lumberman had plenty of lumber; the quarry man had plenty of lime rock; the hardware man had plenty of hardware and paint. Then they had plenty of masons, carpenters, painters, etc. who had 2. in-m- plenty of time on their hands. Here was the material and the labor in abundance, so thp President suggessed that they create their own medium of exchange . The government would print the money, backed by he potential wealth in material and workmen, to build the Market House. This money would be given to the brickmaker, the quarryman, the hardware man, the carpenter, the bricklayer, the painter, etc. for their work, and these would in turn give this money to the grocer, the milkman, the coal man, the tailor. ; etc. This money was printed; Hie work started. Everybody accepted the money and everybody was happy. The Market was completed and opened with a celebration, a thing of use and value, costing $20,000. Not one cent went to bankers for commissions or interest. As the money was collected for renti als it was put away in the safe, taken out of circulation and at the end of five years it was burned. It had played its part Issue after issue of this money was printed, for road building, schools and public buildings, and a multitude of other But, lo, the English bankers stepped in, demanded equal rights with the people of the Island and opened a bank, and by bribery and chicannery and deception won the right to issue money, and a contract was signed, which stipulated that no more than $200,000 of the peoples money be allowed to circulate. This required the government to withdraw $75,000 from circulation and the bank was given the privilege of issuing $75,000, for which the bank received $75,000 in government bonds. This was in 1836. If the bank had not interfered with the people these notes would have been paid many, many times over, but because of the banking system, the debt, after 100 years, still hangs over the people, and they have paid $216,000 in interest alone, and the $75,000 debt still stands as originally. But more than this. The bank continually issued money against the $75,000 to customers until it has collected $750,000 more in interest in putting the issued, used and redeemed to everlasting good of people. |
