Show CONFERENCE AT HYRUM. ON Saturday and Sunday last, February 14th and 15th, a conference was held at Hyrum, in this county. Among the visitors from Logan, were Councilor C.O. Card, Elders John B. Thatcher, Charles Nibley, Henry [Hanson?] B.M. Bavsten, Jed. M. Blair, Frank J. Cannon. Large congregations of Saints made the meetings interesting; and a good spirit seemed to animate both speakers and hearers. Remarks of a very instructive nature were made; and many interesting reports were given. On Sunday the general and local church authorities were presented and unanimously sustained. Following are some of the principal items from reports. The Saints in Hyrum number 1326 souls, over 400 of whom are children under eight years of age. Donations to the Temple amount to $10,000. The report of the Relief Society, of which Sister Liljenquist? is President and Sister Neilsen [Neilson], Secretary, shows that there have been subscribed the follow [following] amounts since 1875: to Logan Temple, $510.02; to missionaries, $157.08, to the needy, $155.70; Centennial expenses, $33.68, public debt, $33.10?; Logan factory, $25.91; Salt Lake Temple, $36.00?; P.P. Fund, $43.88, Sundry expenses, $30,00; paid for house, lot, and granary, $433,01. Cash out on interest, $31.11. Wheat stored, 398 bushels. Elder L.C. Thoreson, President of the Y.M.M.I.A. [Young Men Mutual Improvement Association] stated that the society was in a better condition than ever before; meetings are held jointly with the Y.L.M.I.A. [Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association] and are attended by many non-members; number of members enrolled, 93. The last named association is presided over by Sister Harriet Osborn and numbers 81 members. Elder Peter Christianson, senior school trustee, stated that the four day schools were in a flourishing condition. They are conducted on the graded system, the teachers being I.C. Thoreson, Alice Robbins, Mrs. Rice, and Mrs. F. Benson. Over 200 pupils are in attendance. The report given by Elder A.A. Allen, Superintendent of Sunday Schools, was very interesting. It showed that the total number of officers and teachers was 458. Elder C.C. Shaw read a very encouraging report from the primary association. Lucy Wilson is president and 90 members are enrolled. Many good words were spoken for the Leader, and a number of new subscribers obtained. The choir at Hyrum under the able direction of Elder Henry H. Peterson, is one of the best we have heard in Utah's country towns. In the north, it is second only to that in Logan. The people are industrious and enterprising, and a spirit of union prevails, on every hand are seen evidences that the wise counsels of the Bishop Liljenquist are being faithfully put into practice. |
