Show THE P b tk E F UTE UT E OF THE AMERICAN NEGRO RO by IX W culp A MM SL D M IV I 1 w WILL not admit as some do that the South southern ewh whites whit we are the negros best friends for br there is a elms class of white men and 4 women in the north who are far better friends to the negroes than the southern whites I 1 refer to the men and women who before the war labored assiduously and indefatigably with their voices voice iii their prayers their pens and with their money for the negros negroes emancipation and who since the war have given their mili lions hona to the establishment and the maintenance of the ahe schools co colleges and universities that are sending fort hyoun enthusiastic negro men and women wamen who are doing much toward the solution of their problem I 1 refer also to those heroic men and women who taking their lives in their own hands came t to this south land when it was dangerous to come to labor in the schools and in other spheres to educate the downtrodden negroes we have no such friends as these in the south but we have whites in the south who are friendly enough to the negroes to wish them well it is through this class of whites that we have tolerably good public school schol facilities and in some instances good colleges tor for the higher training of our young men and women woman I 1 believe that every southam baa 10 normal r mai an and 2 in industrial du college for higher education of the negroes and that some of the southern churches as the methodist episcopal the presbyterian and the episcopalian co are operating colleges for the negroes this class of whites have encouraged and helped the negroes to buy homes and lands now while this class of whites are not willing for the negroes to enjoy to the same extent as themselves the immunities rights and privileges guaranteed to them by the constitution yet they desire to see their status along this line bettered they are willing for the negroes to have better accommodations on the railways but they are not willing for them to ride in cars can with themselves they are willing for the courts to deal justly with the negroes except where white men are involved I 1 do not believe that there are a hundred white men in all the south who would favor the hanging of a prominent e man for the murder of a negro this class of whites are willing for the za groes to be educated to a certain extent but they are not willing for them to be educated to the same extent as themselves A few ot of this elms class are am opposed to the lynch ing of negroes even when there is evidence of their guilt it would not be amiss at this juncture to mention the fact that there are ganv whites in the south who orho have always licen been the negroes friends it wa was amons of this elms class who were opposed to si slavery lavery and would woula not own ilav slaves ezi it was masters of this dass class who manumitted their staves and sent them north or to it was wa persons 1 orthis dabi who 1 would mot knot go to the to fight Jor for the perpetuation of slavery until unta forced to do 3 ao D it W I 1 I 1 I 1 dt this elm class who di ew x iian av ai aa A IN ear dl ak q gw k 7 g a tz w S in every everyday way now this class of whites the negroes should regard and treat as frienda friend si to do this is to make them and to get more out of them the the negroes of the south have lost loaf considerably by their antagonism to the southern whites second the negroes must take a lively interest in the white mans best beat welfare somehow it has not gotten into the minds minde of many of the negroes that the two races are so intimately connected that what effects the one effects the other and what helps the one helps the other that when the white man pr prospers ospen the negro prospers that when the white mum man has money the negro has work and bread and that when the white man has no money the negro has neither work nor bread within the past three years during which the white man by reason of the financial stringency has not been able to employ and give bread to the idle negro it has been seen by the negroes as aa never before that the interests of the two ram races are am identical that being true how important it is that the negro should interest himself in the white mans beat welfare to do this is to receive in turn the white mans interest and friendship one of the many things that have made the white man feel unfriendly toward the negro and indifferent to his welfare is in the fact that P after getting his bread his home and the education of his children through the white mans employing jand d paying h him abood good wages the negro antagonizes the white mans interest let the negro then realize that his and the white mans interests are one that he and the white man must stand or fall together do what he can to promote the white mans inte interests intents and the white man will feel better toward him and do more to advance his interests ter te rests estat if the two races are to live here in peace they must look to each others interests and labor for each others welfare third the negroes must disintegrate politically the negros po lotical solidity has worked greatly to their disadvantage it h bag made and kept up the solid south the negroes being solidly Be republican publican the whites are solidly democratic to prevent negro domination but for the negros negroes political solidity the solid south would have broken long ago now the negros political and for that matter his other salvation will never come as long ss as the negroes are an solid nothing therefore will break the solid south but the political disintegration of the negroes now if the negroes i can break the solid south by disintegrating te they had better disintegrate for the solid south means the negros political oppression I 1 need not remind the reader of th the melancholy tact fact that with few exceptions the thousands thousand of ue ne groes who have been alain since the war were murdered for no other reason th than an that they were republicans and voted solidly for republican candidates candidate s nor need I 1 state that the ballot box stuffing the tissue ballot 9 and the other villainous election frauds were the ach schemes emes of solid democrats to defeat solid negro republicans nor need need I 1 say that the figure failure of the negroes to have their votes totes counted is due to the fact that those votes vom were cast soloy solidly esst the negroes I 1 disintegrate te and an a ballot box stuff stuffing mg i the WM tissue ballot and the other election i frauds ami the murdering M M 0 of negroes for political reasons will be numbered with the things of f tho the past nor will there ever be taj the i best of feeling between the two races in m the south as long as the negroes are solid poli politically t i cally on one i hand hrand and the whites are arc solid qu on the other let the negroes disintegrate te rate and much of the bad feeling feel on the part of the whites toward them will vanish to be continued con linued |
