Show TO THE FAITHFUL SLAVES POLK MILLER AMILLER of virginia that polished gentleman and splendid dialectician was the orator on the occasion of the unveiling of a monument to the faithful slaves of the confederacy at fort mill S C may 31 1896 this beautiful 1 monument was erected by bv capt 1 samuel E white of fort mill S C capt white 1 was himself myself hi 1 a large arge slave owner and at the outbreak of the war was among the first to enlist in the cause of the south and remembering and appreciating I 1 the true worth of the old i slaves has at his own expense erected this splendid marble shaft in memory of their kindness and faithfulness the monument is surmounted by a statue of an old time plantation I 1 negro as he rests on his hoe there is at the oase nase a perfect representative of old black mammy pressing 9 tenderly to her bosom mammas Mam mys little boy bov mr miller in his speech paid a beautiful tribute to the faithful old slave and with consummate skill moved the immense audience to tears and laughter ra at will the above was handed us by judge A G Ni norrell orrell of this city I 1 a cultured southern gentleman rud and a true friend of the broad ax it I 1 shows a tender teader sympathy and just appreciation of L the color colored ed race by the white people of the south never will our race find truer or i better friends than exist on the very soil where they were once held as slaves these white people know I 1 us best they understand our nature our wants and our hopes for f or the future and they can be depended upon to aid and assist their colored brethren more than an any v I 1 other people on earth the negroes of the south are fast finding this out and they will show their gr gratitude ati by operating cooperating co with their old masters in fraternity and prosperity |
