Show Office Hours Monday - Friday I 3 Office Ferry Hall 2nd Floor pm 7 pm - Westminster College is a growing college. It has already completed two major steps in the development of its physical plant. .As the scope of the college communi- ty increases, there will be a resultant increase in student body enrollment. This in turn will precipitate difficulty in communications both between the students within the student body ,and equally as important, between students and administration. The burden for channelling suggestions from the student body and dicta from th,e administration to their respective audiences whether it be students, administration, or the college community in general will rest primarily upon the shoulders of the SGA officers. It will be the responsibility of the student body officers, within the framework of student controlled functions, to seize upon every opportunity leading to the fullest expression student body goals. In keeping with what I believe to be the progressive nature of Westminster, these goals should be something other than mere satisfaction with existing conditions. This is not to say that we have been static in the past and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jim Morris and the rest of the of officers for the excellent job they have done this year but rather this to say that there are still, and surely there will always be, areas needing a dynamic and forward looking approach. In keeping with my progressive concept I would wage a vigorous attack upon the - instruments of conveyance of information to the e student body, battle for of a high budget in areas such as the Parson and the Etosian. I would like to see independent and responsible Parson and Etosian staffs. Also of grave necessity is the promotion of better interdorm relationships. In order to facilitate more finances towards the student union fund I would like to see extension f the student lounge hours. I cordially invite any individuals to discuss with me, ' main-tainanc- t I I freely and frankly, any question he has concerning any- thing within the scope of the j 1 college community. We are in the fourth year of the Development program at Westminster College. I would like to propose that we, ' as students, supplement this building phase with a unique enterprise of our own. This involves a personal commitment and concerns our pride as Westminster students. All of us have ambitions, purposes, and goals towrard which we are hopefully directing our lives. Our college education, wre feel, is the first step in preparing for the expected challenges. These feelings, commendable as they are, may at times come close to a dangerous obsession. We become so absorbed in them that an important element is left in vagueness. This is that perennial subject of spirit, interest, and feeling necessary for a dynamic student organization. Attempts to stimulate this phase has been in the form of organizations, clubs, and the like. Certainly the National Student Association offers an opportunity for student participation as yet not realized on our campus. And projects such as the Model United Nations, Model Congress and intramural programs give us directions toward which we may apply our efforts. The opportunities are available, needing only nourishment from the talents of our students. Our poten- tial is the great asset, needing and dedication. Improvements in the news organs of our campus, the Parson and Etosian. Much of this can be attributed to a closer tie with the S.G.A.C. But occasional glimmers of success should only serve as stimulants to an overall application of effort, talent, and confidence. Westminster College is developing and expanding facilities and influence. Growth and optimism are rising when once dissatisfaction bordered on despair. The path is being cut by Dr. Duddy and the fine support contributed by other unselfish individuals. We have the potential, the example, and the opportunities. The challenge is before us, waiting effort and accomourplishment. Let us apply of a selves to the concept our dynamic student body and can personal improvement only experience growth. A thousand great men; a million great books. All this has been accomplished because of the willingness to try, and the unerring love for what is great. Here am I, stubborn to try the path others have walked, willing to do my best at all times, and the unerring love of a mother for a child. I come to you with working' hands, and eager mind to offer what I possess as a candidate for S. G. A. C. Secretary. May I never Cry the Beloved Country for what I have not done or tried to do. I can do no more than this, that I give my all to you as others have tried to do before. The decision is yours. With it you and I must live. BARBARA SMITH The offic of secretary is often thought' of as a' secondary one. The secretary is one who sits at the meetings and takes minutes. There is really no platform, as such, that a secretary can lay down, but she can support the platform and ideas of the other officers. In my opinion, the secretarys position is not secondary. There is much more to her job than recording minutes and w'riting letters and all of her duties are not written down. The officers of any small group or large organization must be competent, and able to handle the responsibilities asspecific offices. In to their signed addition to this, however, all the officers must have the ability to work together as a team. I am running for SGAC secretary because I want to work for Westminster, and for the students. VOTE! |
