Therefore, in order to prove my neutral stand on the issue, the intention of this issues Bean Poll is to give the opponents of compulsory chapel the equal time they have so vehemently demanded. Alas, I say to my critics, Peace. Peace. Let there be peace. Let there be no more bickering." I have received Nome: Class: Major: Dwayne Clark Junior tend chapel only because it is required. Because ot the fact that .chapel is required, I feel that there is a violation of the freedom of worship. Name: D. W. Schmidt Class: Freshman Major: I have always felt that the gospels were potent enough that a person did not have to be required to listen to them. It is difficult for me to believe that our Lord would even have approved of requiring a person to listen to his messages. Obviously, the administration of this college feels differently about the subject However, if they insist on requiring us to attend chapel, I think that it is their responsibility to present' interesting and varied speakers and subjects. This has rarely been done. If you disagree with me, would you please observe, during the next chapel, the number of students busily studying, all Of which tends to degrade the quality of worship. A person would have to be extremely naive to admit that the responsibility of the administration, in this area, is being fulfilled. Pre-Theolo- Pegu $ Criticism on Criticism Lady Loverly's Chatter It seems that the year is almost over and that the time has flown so swiftly. Behind us are the football and basketball seasons, Christ- mas and Easter vacations, Mardi Gras, the Junior and Senior Proms, and the Spring Cotillon. Many students are no longer with us. We have many new faces 'rom California, Wisconsin, Wyo- first-semest- er ming, Illinois, Nevada, Hawaii, and Jtah. These people include Jim Cochran, Mike White, Carol Hiller, Greg Chachas, Tom Morgan, Bob Branch, Barry Williams, Dick Adamson, Dave Branch, Ian Men-niDick Homrighaus, and Sibyl Boschetto. Quite a bit of traveling was done over Easter vacation. Karl Sokol, Rudy Kellerman, and Nick Dag none made the long trip to New York. Homer Ng, Dave Branch, and "am Cooper spent their vacation n Chicago. Jim Hansen and Tom Jrqhardt covered quite a bit of California and even invaded Mexico. Ken Ricci, Phil Sheller, Jerry Neilson, Terry Hunter, Ken Johnson, Margaret Rhodes, and Bonnie Blazer were the soaking the warm California sun" at Carol Chewnings cottage at Newport Beach. Other visitors to 'California were Pat Markham, Joan Skorcz, Carol Babcock, and Jan Parker. Ginger Johnson visited ulie Ewers in Wyoming, and Penny Hartwell went to Hawaii. Weve noticed that certain people have become associated with certain traits. Can you imagine: Tam Cooper wearing shoes? Dave Branch without a tan? Libby Dodd with blonde hair? Linda Geppert with a southern accent? Professor Mauer losing his temper? e, Political Science One can assume that the con tinued existence of a decadent situation, such as prevails at 9:50 a.m. every Wednesday, has sufficient merit in the hierarchy to warrant an ominous threat on page 44 of the college catalog. Uneasy, because the rest of the world seems to be ignorant of his capabilities, the nouveau intellectual undertakes to display his intellectual capacity. Unfortunately, this display often takes the form of criticism because it is the easiest method and the most dynamic. Chronic criticism may also be a method of placating a deep frustration. Symptoms of chronic criticism in the early stages usually begin with an attack on traditions surrounding religion. Religion is the first to fall because of its over JOKE?? Ferry Hall, Westminster mens dormitory, is situated only a short distance from Hogle Hall, home of the feminine students. Recently, the occupants of Ferry were becom whelming popularity and possibly because of its idealistic nature. One sure way to be noticed is to be completely different. In this sense, the word different" is miles apart from the word unique." Political criticism will naturally follow. Constructive criticism is good, in fact, our country was founded on the assumption that people would not tolerate any encroachment by government would make their will known and thereby enjoy government expressing the wishes of the majority. The criticism which is being mentioned here is not of the constructive type, but rather the type which is choking our socithe type ety to a slow death which has irrational and prejudiced overtones. The true intellectual does not care who is aware of his mental ability. He does not aliow personal frustrations, and prejudices, to influence his opinions. The more informed one becomes, the less critical is his nature. The true intellectual will be the first to voice his opinions when situations warrant, but never to impress anyone. Fortunately, some individuals outgrow the pale yellow disease of irrational criticism, for it is a childhood disease. The only difficulty is that some individuals never achieve adulthood although they live long lives. As our parting advice, wed like to say. DONT!! TAKE THE LOAD OFF YOUR FEET The French have a term, nouveau riche, which means newly rich. This term has been applied to many individuals in our society, evidently because the nouveau rich are so numerous in American society. The person to whom this term, is applied is the typical snob" of our society; very conscious of his social status and oblivious to the circumstances circumventing his ascent, or to the criteria used in determining this status" personal wealth. The nouveau rich will condemn those who have not achieved his heights for not having the "determination and fortitude" he has, and overlook the fact that possibly circumstances played some part in his success.
