Students are not willing to work and dont do well in high school, but still believe they will go to college. Richard McAllister has taught school for 36 years. He currently teaches senior English at Brighton High School. He said that such things as coming to class, doing assignments and taking tests are not important to students, but when grades come out, they want good grades, he said. Hawes said, Be3-- cause kids are already failing when they come into my classes, they have poor study habits and often continue to fail. According to Hawes, students dont bring paper, pencils, calculators or even books to class. But, they have grandiose ideas about where they will go to college after high school, she said. Hawes does admit, however, On the other end ofthe spectrum are the kids who buckle down and will work. They come prepared. They are willing to make the sacrifice. Hawes said she believes the trend in the school system to segregate students according to their abilities is a disservice to them. They are not left within a classroom where they have positive peer role models. Many get involved with poor peer choices, and at the end of the semester they are either bored or in the habit of missing school. Glenn Bowers, head ofthe Brighton High School math department, has taught school for 29 years. He teaches advanced place- ment mathematics and calculus.
