Joes parents traveled from Seattle to attend the race. Arriving at the campus approximately 10 minutes before the Fun Run was to begin, I sensed the energy in the air. With the wind gusting, it was a challenging day for a race. I was planning to participate in the race, but I had a ... pulled ... a sprained ankle. Yeah, thats the ticket. So I chose to be a spectator. I watched the runners stretching and loosening up, sprinting back and forth getting ready for the race. I started to get the fever, if only my knee er, I mean, my ankle were better. The runners .were given instructions and then those immortal racing words, on your mark, get set, go! The runners started out of the gate, while I lagged behind, jogging to the Coke machine for a dose of caffeine. After all, it was 10 a.m. on a Saturday. Ambling to the Coke machine was enough exercise for me. The race was a 5K, and in order to accomplish the needed three miles, the course was set up to cover approximately Career Corner i ' k .1&2 ; ,J A s? i w I I The Career Comer is brought to you by - the Career Resource Center. President Dick finished slightly off his predicted pace of 20 minutes, with a time of 32 minutes 13 seconds. The president jokingly said, I was glad to have finished the race 49th out of 50. The wind and the hills killed me." He said the race was for a worthy cause and hoped the race will continue to be an annual event. With the race event coming to a close, well-monitor- ed Joes grandfather, with thoughts of his grandson on his mind said, Joey was a good kid, he had a lot of obstacles in his life and he overcame them all." As I was waitingfor the conclusion of the race, I couldnt helpimagining Joe Gunderson at the finish line, cheering and rooting for those who had run the race. As a student, I personally want to applaud those who participated in the race and vow next year when my toe heals I mean, when my ankle heals I too will participate. (Editors note: yeah, right!)
